January 23, 2025
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries

Today, in response to the confirmation of animals infected with swine fever, a livestock infectious disease, at a pig farm in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries held a rotational meeting of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Swine Fever and African Swine Fever Prevention Headquarters to decide on a future response policy.

There is a possibility that the virus of this disease is present at the site and in the surrounding area, and there is a risk of the disease spreading through people and vehicles. We ask for your cooperation in strictly refraining from reporting at the site and in the surrounding area.

1. Overview of the affected farm

Animal husbandry: Approximately 4,800 heads.

2. Background

(1) On Wednesday, January 22nd, Gunma Prefecture received a report of abnormalities (emaciated) in piglets at a farm in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture , and so entered the farm and carried out an inspection.
(2) As Gunma Prefecture's inspection raised suspicions of swine fever, the Animal Health Research Institute of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (Note) carried out detailed inspections, and it was discovered on Thursday, January 23rd that the animals were suffering from swine fever.

(Note) Animal Health Research Institute of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization: Japan's only research institute for animal health

3. Future Actions

Based on the "Guidelines for the Prevention of Specified Livestock Infectious Diseases Related to Classical Swine Fever," the following measures will be implemented:

(1) Necessary prevention measures, such as the culling and incineration of the pigs on the farm will be implemented promptly and appropriately.
(2) A national epidemiological investigation team will be dispatched to investigate the route of infection, etc.
(3) Early detection and early reporting of the disease will be ensured.
(4) While working closely with relevant ministries and agencies, efforts will be made to provide accurate information to producers, consumers, distributors, etc.
(5) Thorough guidance will be given on compliance with animal husbandry hygiene management standards, such as disinfecting farms and preventing the intrusion of wild animals into farms.

4. Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Swine Fever and African Swine Fever Prevention Headquarters

Date and time: Thursday, January 23, 2025 (held in rotation)

5.Other

(1) Classical swine fever is a disease of pigs and wild boars, and is not infectious to humans.
(2) We ask for your cooperation in strictly refraining from reporting on-site, as this may cause the disease to spread and may violate the privacy of farmers.
In particular, we ask that you refrain from using helicopters or drones to report on the situation, as this may interfere with quarantine work.
(3) We will continue to strive to provide prompt and accurate information, so we ask for your cooperation in ensuring that producers and other related parties and consumers are not confused by unfounded rumors.
