Swine fever at a pig farm in Minamiawaji, 650 pigs to be slaughtered, first time in 34 years at a pig farm in the prefecture Prefecture countermeasures headquarters

2023/7/22 21:30

Hyogo Prefecture announced on the 22nd that it confirmed the infection of swine fever (CSF), a domestic animal infectious disease, at a pig farm in Minamiawaji City. About 650 pigs raised at this farm will be slaughtered from the same day, and epidemic prevention measures such as incineration and burial will be carried out for about a week. This is the first case of swine fever at a pig farm in the prefecture in 34 years, since 1989 when it was confirmed as "pig cholera" in Kozuki Town (now Sayo Town).
According to the prefectural government, on the morning of the 20th, a pig farm in Minamiawaji City reported to the prefecture's Awaji Livestock Hygiene Center that there were pigs with poor growth and dead pigs. On the 22nd, a total of 10 piglets were confirmed to be positive in a national genetic test.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

An outbreak was confirmed in Karatsu-City in Saga Prefecture on 30th August 2023. (88th Classical swine fever (CSF) outbreak in Japan since 2018) The chronology of the disease confirmation and official responses are as follows. On 29th August 2023, the owner of a pig farm reported to the Livestock Hygiene Service Center (LHSC) of Saga Prefecture about an increase in the mortality of pigs kept in the farm. Official veterinarians of the LHSC visited the farm to conduct clinical examination and collected samples from the pigs. Samples were tested for CSF by RT-PCR at the laboratory of the LHSC and found to be positive. On 30th August, National Institute of Animal Health (NIAH) performed gene sequencing and confirmed that the detected virus strain was wild-type. Stamping out of all animals and relevant control measures have been implemented. Movement restriction and shipment restriction are imposed on farms within a radius of 3 km and 10 km of the affected farm respectively. Note 1: On 15th October 2019, Japan amended the Guidelines for Control of Specific Domestic Animal Infectious Diseases for CSF to allow vaccination in domestic pigs in designated prefectures (vaccination recommended areas). The vaccination in domestic pigs is being practiced in the following 39 prefectures as of 30th August 2023, Aichi, Akita, Aomori, Chiba, Ehime, Fukui, Fukushima, Gifu, Gunma, Hiroshima, Hyogo, Ibaraki, Ishikawa, Iwate, Kagawa, Kanagawa, Kochi, Kyoto, Mie, Miyagi, Nagano, Nara, Niigata, Okayama, Osaka, Okinawa, Saitama, Shiga, Shimane, Shizuoka, Tochigi, Tokushima, Tokyo, Tottori, Toyama, Wakayama, Yamagata, Yamaguchi, Yamanashi. Note 2: When a CSF outbreak is confirmed, Japan implements movement restrictions in the Movement Restriction Zone (MRZ), which is established within 3 km radius of the affected farm and in the Shipment Restriction Zone (SRZ), which is established within 3-10 km radius of the affected farm. Restriction zones, which consists of MRZ and SRZ, will not be established in the vaccination recommended areas. When an outbreak is confirmed in a prefecture where the vaccination is not practiced in domestic pigs and subsequently the restriction zones have been established, SRZ and MRZ can be lifted when all the test results from the post-outbreak active surveillance program are negative, and 17 days and 28 days, respectively, have passed after completion of all relevant control measures.
