The number of people newly found to be infected with the HIV virus in Japan came to 1,503 in 2010, with a record high 453 developing AIDS, the health ministry said in a preliminary report released Monday. The total figure of new HIV infections is the second highest on record following 1,557 marked in 2008, the health ministry?s AIDS Trend Committee said.

The number of new AIDS patients reported in Japan last year hit a record high of 453.
The health ministry says the number of people newly found to be infected with the HIV virus last year came to 1,503, including those who had already developed the disease. The figure is the second highest on record.
63 percent were infected through homosexual contact, and 21 percent through heterosexual contact.
By age group, 535 patients were in their 30s, followed by 374 in their 20s....
