Japan on high alert over foot-and-mouth disease

Japan's agriculture ministry is stepping up its efforts to prevent foot-and-mouth disease entering the country, amidst a continuing outbreak in South Korea.

More than 2.8 million cows and pigs on 5,062 farms in almost all parts of South Korea have been slaughtered, but the disease is still spreading there.
The ministry says a large number of people and products are expected to travel in early February, the start of the Lunar New Year in South Korea.
That means Japan will face a higher risk of the disease entering the country through trade and travel....

Airport trying to block foot-and-mouth virus

Kansai Airport in western Japan is taking additional quarantine measures following outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in South Korea and other Asian countries.

Airport officials distributed flyers to departing travelers on Monday, urging them not to bring back meat products from countries where cases of the disease have been reported.
They are also asking travelers to visit a quarantine office when they return from the affected areas to have their golf shoes and other items checked for contaminated soil....
