Japan gets cattle disease-free clearance

The World Organization for Animal Health or OIE has declared Japan free of foot-and-mouth disease.

Japan experienced its worst ever outbreak of the disease last April in the southwestern prefecture of Miyazaki. More than 100-thousand livestock animals had to be culled.
On Friday, the OIE declared that Japan had successfully gotten rid of foot-and-mouth disease after the country had requested disease-free certification...

Following the report of 20 April 2010 received from the OIE Delegate of Japan on an outbreak of FMD in Tsuno-cho Koyu-gun (prefecture of Miyazaki), the "FMD free Member where vaccination is not practised" status for Japan as recognised by the OIE World Assembly of Delegates in terms of Resolution XVII in May 2001, is suspended with immediate effect.
