Japan health minister urges caution after 5 measles cases confirmed

Japan's health minister Takemi Keizo has urged people to be on guard against possible measles infections after five cases of the virus were confirmed in people who arrived from the United Arab Emirates.

Europe, Southeast Asia and other regions have recently experienced measles outbreaks.

As of Thursday, Japan had confirmed five cases among people who were on board a flight from the Middle Eastern country that arrived at Osaka's Kansai International Airport late last month. The infected people are residents of Osaka, Aichi and Gifu prefectures.

Takemi told reporters on Friday that the number of cases in Europe was more than 30 times greater than that of the previous fiscal year, and they reportedly included some serious and fatal infections.​..
 
Measles cases in Japan raise concerns

Efforts to prevent measles from taking hold in Japan are currently focused on cases linked to Kansai Airport in Osaka Prefecture.

A man in Kyoto tested positive earlier this week. He had been at the airport last month. It is possible that he came into contact with infected passengers on a flight from the United Arab Emirates.

Eight people who were on that flight have also since tested positive.

The head professor of Kawasaki Medical School, Nakano Takashi, says the vaccines are effective. He says: "People who have had measles before are generally immune. And people who have been vaccinated twice generally do not develop symptoms, even if they come into contact with someone who has measles."
