The alert was triggered about ten days ago, when a seagull was found dead on the beaches of Toscolano Maderno. So a private individual took him to Cras di Lazie and from the analyzes carried out at the Experimental Zooprophylactic of the Venezie he tested positive for avian flu. This is the first case of H5N1 on Lake Garda. And it is from that moment that the level of attention on the whole lake has risen, also because dozens of seagulls have been dying between Desenzano and Sirmione since last weekend. Yesterday, just like Friday, the agents of the provincial police of Brescia received reports of other dead specimens in the Punta Grò area, in Sirmione, as well as in Desenzano.

Avian flu in Garda Lake, hundreds of seagulls died in Desenzano. Cases from Sirmione to Salò

At least 80 seagulls dead on the beach of Vò di Desenzano. And these numbers were reached in just over 24 hours. The area bordering Lonato has turned into a sort of 'hotbed' of bird flu in Lower Garda. Yes, by now there is the certainty that it is the H5N1 strain and the confirmation has arrived from the analyzes of the experimental zooprophylactic institute of Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna. Also yesterday morning the municipal workers and the Ats removed the carcasses of the seagulls. While the staff of the provincial police of Brescia was busy, between Desenzano and Sirmione, to recover the specimens still alive, together with the volunteers of the WWF Bergamo-Brescia.

These seagulls were transferred, in isolation, to the provincial police headquarters where they are swabbed by Ats employees. In such a context, where the Municipality of Desenzano is only waiting for the official outcome of the analyzes to issue an ordinance considering the presence of important poultry farms on its territory, reports of dead seagulls are increasing among the other towns on Lake Garda.

Cases of dead birds are also occurring in Sirmione, Lonato, Toscolano, Padenghe and Salò. As is known, the municipal administration of Desenzano, coordinated by the mayor Guido Malinverno, has forwarded to the citizens the prescriptions to follow even if up to now no ordinance to close the beaches has been issued, in view of this weekend. Until tomorrow, families could crowd the shores, complete with children, and there is the risk that someone could touch the dead or dying specimens.

Bird flu: 500 seagulls dead, the alarm remains high


If in Lower Garda the flu seems to be losing strength, cases are increasing in the rest of the province. The alarm caused by the H5N1 virus strain, responsible for avian flu, continues unabated worldwide. In our province, the cases of dead birds have reached approximately 500, with the highest incidence in Lower Garda.

In the Municipalities of Desenzano, Padenghe, Moniga, Manerba and San Felice in the last few days the cases would be decreasing, but it seems that the front is expanding in Valtenesi, towards the Matovano and on the Veronese side of the Garda. The fear is that the flu could reach the Bassa, where there are numerous chicken and turkey farms, even if at the moment the only affected species are seagulls. There are several municipalities that have recommended reporting the discovery of dead birds immediately.

Avian flu in Garda lake, over 120 carcasses of seagulls removed between Sirmione and San Felice

Hundreds of people flocked to the Garda towns over the last weekend, thanks to the sun and (almost) spring-like temperatures. In such a context, however, the flu epidemic continues to torment the seagulls. Since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 600 specimens have died. Between Saturday and Sunday, the agents of the Brescia province police, coordinated by the commander Dario Saleri, recovered over 120 carcasses. The dead birds were found especially between the beaches of Sirmione, in the Punta Grò area, and those of San Felice del Benaco. Then other dead birds were reported by some citizens also in Desenzano, Padenghe, Manerba and Salò.

In the meantime, after the Municipality of Salò, the Municipality of Padenghe has also chosen to issue an information notice to the citizens: «Given the death of seagulls due to the probable avian infection - it is reported in the short press release - which involves the entire territory of Lake Garda, if dead birds are found in a public area, citizens are invited to report it to the technical office which will contact the provincial police for the recovery of the carcasses'. Notice appeared not only on the portal of the Municipality of Padenghe, but also on the digital information signs present in the area.
