Italy: H5N3 low pathogenicity in in an ostrich farm in the Mantua area

Editor, Senior Moderator
Serological positivity for H5 flu virus in an ostrich farm in the province of Mantua. The samples had been taken as part of ordinary surveillance. There was no clinical symptomatology in ostrich breeding, about a hundred animals, which on June 16 had serological positivity for H5 flu virus. Confirmation came on June 16 from the National Reference Center for Avian Influenza, following tests for inhibiting haemagglutination.

According to the Ministry of Health, the lack of clinical symptoms and the absence of cross-reactivity towards highly pathogenic antigens of the subtype H5, suggest that they are low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI). Phylogenetic analysis is underway to establish the examination of the pathotype and neuraminidase.
