BIRD FLU: MOLISE, 10 MILLION FOWL NOT PRODUCED
http://www.agi.it/english/news.pl?d...CRO-0-NF30&page=0&id=agionline-eng.bnessitaly
(AGI) - Campobasso, Sept 20 - Ten million fowl were not produced for a net loss (just for lack of revenue) of about 9 million euros. This is the first estimate of the damage caused by the bird flu syndrome for Molisan farmers. The twentieth region ranks fourth in Italy for the production of poultry meat (36 million fowl a year), from 250 farms. According to the trade union, government help only partly covered the added costs incurred by companies, which will, in a few weeks, once more be paying the taxing contributions. In addition to the direct damages, however, there is also added passive interest to be paid to banks, the near-bankruptcy of dozens of farms and the negative repercussions on the whole industry, if one takes into consideration that Molise is also the seat of Arena, one of the leading Italian companies for white meat. Because of this, Coldiretti has asked the Molise Regional Administration to intervene with its own funds to allow farmers to overcome the effects of the emergency and to re-launch Molisan poultry on the market, which would guarantee "high levels of food security".
