Bird flu, which in recent weeks has caused a massacre of seagulls on Lake Garda, in the area of its outlet, the Mincio river, and along the Adige, has hit a turkey farm. The feared passage of the virus from wild birds to those present in professional structures has therefore occurred. Now it is to be hoped that the contagion will stop there. In fact, only a little over three months have passed since the end of the last epizootic (a term that identifies animal epidemics) which began in September last year and which involved a total of thirty farms in Northern Italy, eight of which in our province.
The bird flu virus has now been discovered in a farm of male meat turkeys in Sorgà, amunicipality not far from the Mincio. The contagion was confirmed yesterday by the Istituto zooprofilattico delle Venezie, which is the national and European reference center for the disease. The positivity was found during the checks carried out before loading the birds on the trucks that transport them to the slaughterhouse.
In the structure, which can house up to 35,000 heads, there were a total of 10,200 turkeys. Following the verification of the outbreak, the slaughtering operations of the animals were immediately started and protection and surveillance zones were established around the structure. These measures, which provide for limitations on breeding activities and bird movements and the increase in prevention measures, are aimed at preventing the spread of the disease.
