13/11/2017 ? On 7 November, the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease confirmed as positive for Avian Influenza A virus subtype H5N8 a rural farm in Rome province (Lazio region). About one hundred laying hens were housed in the farm at the time of confirmation. Samples were taken after a marked mortality increase was observed on 2 November. At the time of confirmation, all the birds were dead. The virus was subsequently characterised by the NRL as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus subtype H5N8.
On 8 November, IZSLER confirmed as positive for Avian Influenza A virus subtype H5 a fattening turkey farm in Cremona province (Lombardy region). At the time of confirmation, the farm housed 13,642 male turkeys. About 930 bovines were also reared in the farm. Epidemiological investigations revealed that the canals encircling the farm were frequented by mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). On 30 October, mortality increase and respiratory symptoms were observed. Birds were subsequently tested for HPAI and resulted negative. The positivity was confirmed after virological controls were carried out on 6 November.
On 9 November, IZSLER confirmed as positive for Avian Influenza A virus subtype H5 a laying hen farm in Brescia province (Lombardy region). At the time of confirmation, the farm housed about 76,010 laying hens. Samples were taken after a mortality increase was observed on 9 November.
On 10 November, the cases confirmed between 2 and 6 November in Brescia province have been characterised by the National Reference Laboratory as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza viruses subtype H5N8.
On the same day, IZSLER confirmed as positive for Avian Influenza A virus subtype H5 another laying hen farm in Brescia province (Lombardy region). About 24,550 laying hens were housed in the farm at the time of confirmation. The positivity was detected after the mandatory pre-movement virological tests. Further information will be provided as soon as available.
