Southern Localities Hit by Newcastle's Disease

Reported: 00:38 AM - Jun/22/09

(IsraelNN.com) Israel's veterinary service declared dozens of localities in the south as being hit by Newcastle's Disease, which doesn't affect people, but does affect poultry and causes economic damage to poultry producers. The outbreak was first reported at turkey farms in Revidim.

Poultry owners are being asked to innoculate their birds, and it's recommended that they be placed in closed coops to prevent the spread of diseases than can affect humans, such as bird flu, Western Nile fever, ornithosis and others. The law requires innoculation the following, in addition to chickens and turkeys: geese, doves/pidgeons, quail, ostriches, emus, pheasants and peacocks.
