Israeli Agriculture Ministry officials met with their Palestinian counterparts on Monday at the Liason Administration offices at the Erez Crossing to the Gaza Strip to discuss ways to prevent an outbreak of the avian flu in Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
Dr. Moshe Haimovich chief veterinarian of the Agriculture Ministry's Veterinary Service, updated the group on recent reports of an avian flu outbreak in Egypt.
"Avian flu does not have borders, which is why we need to act in our mutual interest in time to keep it from spreading," said Col. Nir Press, head of the Gaza Liason Administration.
The sides agreed that Palestinian veterinarians would undergo training in Israel and would receive logistical support in combating avian flu, including access to Israeli laboratories to test samples.
International organizations have said they would reimburse Palestinians who are forced to destroy livestock as a result of avian flu.
