Bird flu makes return to Israel, two months after last recorded case
The last bird flu case reported in Israel was reported on January 19.

A seagull was found to be infected with the H5N1 strain of avian influenza at Habonim, north of Zichron Ya'akov, last week, over two months after the last recorded case, according to the Agriculture Ministry.

According to a case report filed to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), an Armenian gull was found dead at the Habonim Beach Nature Reserve on April 9..

The Ministry of Agriculture has imposed a quarantine on all chicken coops within a radius of up to 10 km


Avian influenza was discovered in a petting zoo on Moshav Sde Ya'akov, in the Jezreel Valley. The disease was detected in about 250 birds on site, including amongst: Peacocks, ducks, pigeons and chickens. The abattoir as well as all the poultry coops within a radius up to 10 km. from the poultry coop in question, are under quarantine. The results of the tests show that the bird flu strain discovered is H5N1.

In order to prevent the spread of the disease, the Ministry of Agriculture operates in accordance with the regular operating procedures related to the handling of bird flu. In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture has informed the Ministry of Health and the Nature and Parks Authority regarding the matter and is in contact with them regarding increased vigilance with respect to the transmission of the disease through wild birds.

The Ministry of Agriculture also calls on the breeders of show birds and backyard birds as well as free-range chickens, to keep the birds inside buildings and to prevent them from roaming in the open, thereby reducing the risk of infection from wild birds.

Last year, Israel was hit by 11 cases of bird flu, starting in November of last year (2022) at Kibbutz Shluchot and then in the period between November and January 2023 of the same year, additional cases of bird flu were discovered at Beit Heirut, Beit Halevy, at Moshav Beit Heirut, on Moshav Beit Halevy [sic], at Moshav Kfar Monash, on Kibbutz Mishmar Hasharon, on Kibbutz Hatzor, on Kibbutz Ein Tzurim, on Kibbutz Magal and at Moshav Be’er Tuvia (three focal points) handled by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Since March 2006, when cases of bird flu were detected on Kibbutz Holit and Kibbutz Ein Haslosha in the south of Israel and at Moshav Sde Moshe in the Lachish Valley, bird flu cases have been detected almost every year.

The Ministry of Agriculture reiterates that it is possible to continue to consume poultry and eggs, but care must be taken to purchase eggs only at organized sales and marketing outlets. The eggs must be marked and packed in cardboard or wrapped in plastic on all sides. In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture emphasizes that eggs and poultry should only be consumed after they have been well cooked / baked / fried.
