Addressing the likely trade impacts, Minister Heydon said “This outbreak will have an impact on exports of cattle and sheep, with additional costs and logistical issues required in order to comply with the rules set by the countries of destination.

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, has today confirmed that an outbreak of bluetongue has been detected in Co Wexford.

Increased Department of Agriculture testing and surveillance for bluetongue have been taking place since the Northern Ireland outbreak in 2025.

It is the first case of bluetongue to be identified in Ireland.

It has not been confirmed what animal has been infected, nor the number of animals.​..

Bluetongue spreads: DAFM confirms cases in 7 counties

The bluetongue virus has now been detected in counties Wexford, Wicklow, Laois, Louth, Monaghan, Kildare and Cork according to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM).

The latest case has been identified in Co. Cork, according to the department.

The first case of bluetongue was confirmed in a suckler herd in Co. Wexford on January 24, earlier this year.

It was detected through the culled cow routine surveillance in a slaughterhouse.

There are different serotypes of the bluetongue virus - the most commonly found in Europe are 1, 3, 4 and 8. The serotype that has been detected in Ireland is 3.
