Iraq to launch campaign to control hemorrhagic fever

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture’s veterinary department stated on Tuesday that a nationwide campaign to eliminate hemorrhagic fever will begin in September by spraying livestock with acaricides, tick-killing sprays.

Director of the veterinary department Thamer al-Khafaji said in a statement that preparations are ongoing to launch the campaign to eradicate hemorrhagic fever, the state-run news agency (INA) reported.

The step also aims to preserve the health of Iraqi citizens and their livestock, according to al-Khafaji.

The Iraqi Ministry of Health revealed last month that the deaths resulting from hemorrhagic fever increased to 30 out of 231 confirmed cases since the beginning of 2025...

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The last two individuals infected with Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) in Duhok province have been discharged from hospital, a health official said on Monday.

Bakhtiyar Ahmed, a senior official from Duhok Health Department, said they have carried out tests on immediate family members of the two individuals, and it turned out they were all safe, but warned the CCHF is still there...

...As of late July, Iraq had reported 231 confirmed infections, including 30 deaths, Saif al-Badr, Iraqi health ministry spokesperson told Rudaw at the time.

CCHF has been endemic in Iraq since 1979, but has seen a resurgence since 2021, particularly in the southern provinces, raising public health concerns.

Hemorrhagic fever deaths in Iraq increase in 2025

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Health revealed on Wednesday that the number of deaths caused by hemorrhagic fever has increased to 42 out of 296 verified cases since the beginning of 2025.

To minimize the spread of this viral disease, the ministry recommended that preventative measures be implemented while interacting with livestock.

According to the World Health Organization, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever is transmitted to people by tick bites or exposure to sick animals’ blood or tissues during or immediately after slaughter.

Iraq, which first reported infections of this virus in 1979, revealed in July that 30 deaths from hemorrhagic fever had taken place out of 231 cases since the beginning of the year.​..
