Re: Influenza Surveillance 2011-2012

Influenza Surveillance Surveillance inin Ireland Ireland ?? Weekly Weekly Report Report
Influenza Week 9 2012 (27th February ? 4th March 2012)**

Summary
? Influenza activity in Ireland remained at low levels during week 9 2012. Several indicators are showing
that influenza activity may have reached its peak for the 2011/2012 season.**
? The sentinel GP influenza‐like illness (ILI) consultation rate was 34.6 per 100,000 population in week 9
2012, a slight decrease compared to the updated rate of 41.8 per 100,000 during week 8 2011.**
Š ILI rates remain above the Irish baseline threshold (25.9 per 100,000 population).**
Š The highest age specific ILI rates were in the 0‐4 year age group during week 9 2012.**
? Forty‐five influenza positive specimens were detected by the NVRL during week 9 2012. Influenza A (H3) has been the dominant influenza virus detected this season.
? The proportion of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) positive detections increased slightly during week 9 2012. RSV activity peaked this season during week 52 2011.**
? Three adenovirus and four human metapneumovirus (hMPV) positive detections were reported during week 9 2012. Positivity levels for hMPV, adenovirus and parainfluenza viruses have remained low this season.***
? Seventeen confirmed influenza hospitalised cases were notified during week 9 2012.**
? One confirmed influenza A (H3) case was admitted to critical care and reported to HPSC during week 9
2012. To date this season, six influenza A (H3) cases admitted to critical care have been reported to HPSC.**
? Three influenza‐associated deaths have been reported to HPSC to date this season.***
? Two influenza A outbreaks were reported to HPSC during week 9 2012. To date this season, six influenza outbreaks and one RSV outbreak have been reported.
? In Europe, the 2011/2012 influenza season started later than in recent seasons and has been without any clear geographic progression. The national influenza season epidemics have peaked in the first affected
countries and remain dominated by influenza A (H3) viruses.

Re: Influenza Surveillance 2011-2012

13 flu deaths last winter

[Posted: Wed 12/12/2012 www.irishhealth.com]

Thirteen flu-associated deaths were recorded by the HSE last winter.

According to the HSE's Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), the average age of those who died of the flu in the 2011-12 seson was 88 years, ranging from 81-98 years.

The HPSC said last winter's flu season began late and influenza activity was mild. Of significance were the late season outbreaks associated with a number of deaths in nursing homes and hospital wards for the elderly.

Seven deaths from flu were reported to have occurred in one nursing home in Buncrana Co. Donegal in March and April of this year.

Vaccination status was known for [12] of the 13 people who died last winter.

Of these, nine had been vaccinated against the flu while three had not been vaccinated.
