Influenza claims two more lives: CDC

Taipei, Sept.7 (CNA) Influenza claimed two more lives in Taiwan last week, bringing the total number of flu deaths since July to 13, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported Tuesday.

"In both cases, the patients died of influenza AH3 virus infections, " said CDC Deputy Director-General Chou Jih-haw. "Neither of them had been immunized against flu viruses."

One of the victims was an 80-year-old woman from Tainan City who had a history of hypertension and diabetes, Chou said. The patient was hospitalized Aug. 28, two days after she developed respiratory problems, and died Aug. 29 of heart failure and sepsis.

The other case was a woman in her 70s who had a history of rheumatoid arthritis and had been in a nursing home since May. She was hospitalized Aug. 30 with a high fever and sore throat and died Sept. 4, Chou said.

"They both tested positive for the AH3 virus," Chou said.

He advised that the public, particularly people in high-risk groups, get vaccinated as this is the safest and most effective way to prevent flu infections or serious complications.

According to CDC tallies, six of the flu-related deaths recorded since July were influenza A(H1N1) cases.

"Although the H1N1 situation is not as serious as it was last year, it still can threaten young people," Chou cautioned.

A 50-year-old man in Kaohsiung County died of H1N1 last week, after he developed complications of invasive pneumococcal disease, Chou said. It was the first such case reported this year, he added.

According to a CDC report released last weekend, 61 cluster outbreaks of influenza viruses had been recorded since
