Indonesian Government to Immunize 120,000 From Parasite

Balikpapan. Some 120,000 residents of North Penajam Paser district in East Kalimantan will take part in a mass medication drive to prevent an outbreak of filariasis, after almost an entire village there tested positive for the parasitic disease.

Sutrisno, head of community health at the district health office, said on Tuesday that the mass drug administration would target residents of four subdistricts, including Babulu, where the affected village of Sebakung Jaya is located, ?to prevent the outbreak from spreading.?

?We?re already seeing new cases in some of the other subdistricts,? Sutrisno said, noting that six confirmed cases of the infectious disease had been found in neighboring Waru subdistrict.

The MDA program comes after recent tests showed 210 of the 300 inhabitants of Sebakung Jaya had the filariasis parasite...
