ENDE, GlobalFlores.com-A total of 1,200 pigs owned by residents of Ende Regency died as a result of being infected with the ASF virus during the period from January to April 2025.
Acting Head of the Ende Regency Agriculture and Livestock Service, Gadir Dean told GlobalFlores.com, Thursday (8/5/2025) in Ende.
Gadir said that the ASF virus had indeed claimed quite a lot of victims for residents' livestock in the form of pigs and this was certainly a loss for pig owners.
However, according to Gadir, the number of pig deaths of 1,200 in Ende Regency is actually small when compared to other areas in the Flores mainland.
Gadir said that his party continues to try to suppress the movement of the virus so that it does not spread further and claim more victims for residents' livestock.
Explained to suppress the ASF (African Swine Fever) virus, several important steps include implementing strict biosecurity, disinfection, isolating sick pigs, and culling infected pigs if necessary.
In addition, prevention is carried out by avoiding contaminated feed and maintaining the cleanliness of the pen.
The following are steps to prevent the ASF virus, namely,
Biosecurity:
Traffic Control:
Limit access to the farm, including people, vehicles, and tools, and make sure they always disinfect.
Contamination Prevention:
Do not let pigs eat leftover food, garbage, or food that is not properly cooked because it can be contaminated with the virus.
Disinfection:
Use an effective disinfectant such as sodium hydroxide, hypochlorite, or detergent.
Disinfection:
Routine Disinfection:
Carry out routine disinfection of the entire farm area, including pens, tools, and equipment.
Vehicle Disinfection:
Spray vehicles entering the farm with disinfectant, especially on the wheel area.
Isolation:
Isolate Sick Pigs: Separate sick pigs from healthy pigs to prevent the spread of the virus.
Culling:
Culling Infected Pigs: If the outbreak spreads, culling infected pigs is a necessary step to control the spread of the disease.
Other Prevention:
Report Cases: Immediately report any sick or dead pigs to the local Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Service.
Do Not Buy or Sell Sick Pigs: Avoid buying or selling pigs that show signs of illness.
Maintain Cleanliness: Maintain personal and environmental hygiene.
Good Feed: Provide quality feed and do not provide leftover food that is not properly cooked.
Risk Mitigation:
Effective Mitigation: Comprehensive and integrated risk mitigation between related sectors is essential to prevent the entry and spread of the ASF virus in Indonesia.
Surveillance: Conduct strict and intensive surveillance in high-risk areas.
Coordination: Local governments are advised to actively coordinate with the Indonesian Quarantine Office.
