No swine flu in Ind; 2 specimens go to CDC
<dl class="byline">By KEN KUSMER |Associated Press Writer<dd>3:08 PM CDT, April 26, 2009</dd></dl> <!-- sphereit start --> INDIANAPOLIS - State officials say Indiana is prepared for a swine flu pandemic, although they haven't seen any cases of the illness that has sickened 20 people in five other states.
Health Commissioner Dr. Judy Monroe says all the U.S. cases are mild, but that may change as the virus mutates. She urges all people who come down with flu-like symptoms to see a doctor and stay home from work.
State epidemiologist Jim Howell says swine flu alerts were sent to Indiana medical providers Thursday.
Howell says the state has sent two flu specimens for tests at the Centers for Disease Control, but it's too early to say what kind of flu the specimens are. He says they don't match other strains that Indiana has seen this year.
