Winter chill sweeps North
Most Jammu and Kashmir areas reeling under sub-zero night temperatures

New Delhi: Most parts of the North India on Tuesday experienced a chilly day as mercury dropped further by a few notches amid foggy conditions.

Cold conditions intensified in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on Tuesday with Adampur, near Amritsar, was the coldest at zero degrees.

Rohtak was the coldest place in Haryana with a minimum of 3.5 degree Celsius while Karnal recorded a low of 5 degrees -- both places three degrees below normal. Union territory Chandigarh recorded a low of 6.2 degrees.

The snowfall in upper reaches of Himachal and Kashmir has brought down the temperature, a Met official said.

Sub-zero levels

Higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh witnessed harsh cold conditions with the temperature dipping to sub-zero levels at several places.

Keylong, headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti district, was the coldest place in the hill State where night temperature was recorded at minus 8.3 degree Celsius.

Under the impact of cold winds, temperatures dropped in Shimla and other lower areas. The State capital recorded a night temperature of 4.4 degrees, while the day temperature was 14.6 deg C.

In Rajasthan, Churu remained the coldest place with a minimum temperature of 4.7 degrees, followed by Mount Abu which settled at 6 degree Celsius.

Gangangar and Jaipur recorded a minimum of 6.2 and 8.8 degree Celsius respectively, Met office said.

Most parts in Jammu and Kashmir were reeling under sub-zero night temperatures, even as mercury showed a slight upward trend during the day.

Kargil recorded a low of minus 15 degrees and a high of minus 3 degree Celsius, while Leh recorded a minimum of minus 10 degrees and a maximum temperature of minus 0.4 degree Celsius.

In Kashmir Valley, Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, while hill resort Pahalgam settled at minus 6.2. Meanwhile, Jammu recorded a night temperature of 4.7 degrees. PTI

New Delhi, Dec 24 (PTI) Cold wave maintained its grip over north India as mercury today dipped further in most parts of the region with the national capital recording its lowest temperature this season.

In Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, the ongoing winter chill further intensified amid foggy conditions with the minimum temperature recording a drop of up to four degree Celsius.

Rohtak in Haryana remained the coldest place in the region at 1.9 degrees Celsius as mercury plummeted by four degrees against normal, Met officials said.

Chandigarh recorded a low of 4.2 deg C, two notches below normal, while Amritsar settled at 3.2 with the minimum temperature going down by one degree.

Icy winds blowing from the snow-capped mountains in northern states continued to grip the national capital with mercury dipping to the season's lowest of 6.1 degree Celsius.

Delhi shivers in icy winds

New Delhi, Dec 30 (PTI) Icy winds blowing from the snow-capped mountains in northern states further intensified the cold wave condition in Delhi even as a thick blanket of fog resulted in several road mishaps in the national capital region, killing three people and injuring four.

Dense fog earlier in the day also delayed over half a dozen domestic flights as the visibility at the runway dropped to 100 metres.

It was all shivers for Delhiites as mercury plummeted to season's lowest of 5.2 degrees and a cold breeze sweeping through the city bringing down the day temperatures by a few notches. The minimum temperature had dipped to 5.2 degrees on last Saturday also. Today's maximum was recorded at 19.9.

Light showers hit UP, temperature dips further

Lucknow, Dec 30 (PTI) With light showers lashing several parts of the state, temperature dipped further in Uttar Pradesh, even as two more persons died due to cold in Barabanki district, official sources said here today.
While the body of a 30-year-old man was recovered in Safedabad, a 70-year-old woman died in Peerbatawn area of Barabanki due to intense cold, taking the total toll to 14, they said.
With minimum temperature hovering around 1.8 degree Celsius, Muzaffarnagar was the coldest place in the state, followed by Meerut, which recorded a minimum temperature of 3.6 degree Celsius, three notches below normal, Met department said.
Gorakhpur recorded a low of 4.9 degree Celsius, which was five degrees below normal, while, Bareilly recorded a minimum of 7 degree Celsius two degrees below the normal mark.
In Aligarh, minimum temperature was 7.5 degree Celsius, which was one notch below normal.

Mercury dips further in HP

Shimla, Dec 30 (PTI) Higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh continued to reel under sub-zero temperature today, even as mercury dropped marginally in the 'queen of hills'.
Shimla recorded a day temperature of 12.9 degree Celsius against yesterday's 14 degrees, Met officials said.
There was a fall in night temperature too which settled at 3 deg C, one notch less than previous night.
Elsewhere, mercury recorded a marginal climb down. While Sundernagar recorded a day temperature of 17.4 deg C, it was 15.7 deg C in Bhuntar and 17.2 in Dharamsala, they said.
Higher reaches of the hill state continued to reel under sub zero temperature. Keylong, the headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti district, recorded a night temperature of minus 6.4 deg C, the coldest in the hill state.
Kalpa in Kinnaur district had a night temperature of minus 4.6 degrees.

Dry cold conditions prevail in U'khand

Dehradun, Dec 30 (PTI) Dry cold conditions continued in Uttarakhand today with the state capital recording a minimum temperature of 5 degree Celsius.
Despite bright sunshine during the day, most parts of the hill state witnessed intense cold, said Met office here.
The weather is likely to remain the same during the next 24 hours, it said.

Cold wave continues in J&K

Srinagar, Dec 30 (PTI) Clear sky overnight further intensified the cold wave which gripped the state as mercury dipped further today by few notches across Jammu and Kashmir.
The minimum temperature in Kargil slipped to minus 14.4 as against minus 13.2 degrees Celsius yesterday, Met office said.
Nearby Leh district recorded night temperature at minus 9.4 degrees Celsius.
Pahalgam in south Kashmir continued to be the coldest place in the valley with a low of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius as against minus 4.5 degrees Celsius yesterday.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius as compared to minus 2.3 degrees Celsius yesterday.
Qazigund in south Kashmir and Kupwara in north Kashmir registered a minimum of minus 3.6 and minus 3.5 degree Celsius, respectively.
However, the night temperature in Kokernag hill resort was at minus 1.9 degrees Celsius today.

Cold wave intensifies in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Dec 30 (PTI) Cold conditions tightened its grip in parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, with mercury falling by up to six notches below normal.
Amritsar continued to remain the coldest place in the region with a low of 0.6 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal, the MET office said here.
The plains of Ludhiana and Patiala recorded a low of 3.6 C and 3.1 C respectively, with minimum temperature dropping by up to four degrees below normal.
In Haryana, Ambala recorded a low of 1.3 C, with mercury reading six degrees below normal, while Hisar witnessed minimum temperature of 6.4 C.
Chandigarh recorded a minimum temperature of 3.8 C, which was two degrees below normal, followed by Bhiwani at 5 C.

Mount Abu coldest in Rajathan

Jaipur, Dec 30 (PTI) Mercury rose by a few notches in parts of Rajasthan with Mount Abu remaining the coldest place in the state with a minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius early this morning.
This was followed by Churu where people shivered at 5.2 degrees Celsius, a MET official said here.
Ganganagar, Sikar, Bundi and Bikaner chilled at 6.3, 8.5 and 8.8 and 9.5 degree Celsius respectively, while Dholpur and Chittorgarh recorded a minimum temperature of 11 degree Celsius.
Jaipur, Jaisalmer and Barmer settled at a low of 11.4, 12.1 and 13.8 degree Celsius respectively.
Meanwhile, Dholpur also received some rainfall.

Some relief likely on chill front

There is some good news on the weather front on the first day of 2010. The Indian Meteorological Department today said cold wave conditions, which have been prevailing over plains of northwest India, including Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, in the past one week are likely to abate from January 3.

IMD Director SC Bhan says there will be a rise in minimum temperatures over plains of northwest India during next two days. However, fog or some shallow fog will continue to occur in Punjab, Haryana and west Uttar Pradesh.

Bhan says a feeble western disturbance is expected from the night of January 2 as a result of which cold wave conditions are expected to abate in the region. Some light rains, though not widespread or heavy, are also likely. After the passage of western disturbance on January 5, night temperatures are expected to fall again, he adds.

In fact cold wave conditions showed some signs of relenting in Punjab and Haryana on the New Year day, though mercury still remained several notches below the normal in some places.

While the first part of December 2009 was warmer than usual and second half cooler than normal, in the New Year also the cold wave continued its trip in several parts of Punjab and Haryana with mercury falling several points below the normal. North Indian plains of Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Patiala and Ambala shivered and minimum temperature dropped by up to four degrees below normal. Cold wave conditions continue to prevail over isolated pockets of Punjab and Haryana while the lowest minimum temperature was recorded of -0.6?C at Adampur (Punjab).

Minimum temperatures were below normal by 2-4?C over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, however, they are above normal by 2-3?C over parts of west Rajasthan, Gujarat and interior peninsula and near normal over rest of the country.

Maximum temperatures are below normal by 4-8?C over parts of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and northeastern states and by 2-4?C over Punjab, north Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal. They are above normal by 2-3?C over parts of north Rajasthan, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu and near normal over rest of the country.

In Delhi it was a foggy start to the New Year with the city continuing to reel under biting cold even as mercury rose marginally to settle at 6.6 degree Celsius. Incidentally the minimum temperature on January 1, 2009, was 8.5 degree Celsius, while it was 2.6 degree in 2007. The all-time record for minimum temperature was recorded on December 26, 1945, when the mercury dipped to 1.1 degree Celsius.

Although minimum temperature climbed by 0.6 degree from yesterday?s 6 degree Celsius, the winter chill continued due to windy conditions. On Wednesday, Delhi had recorded a minimum of 5.2 degree Celsius, the lowest of the season so far.

Bhan says northwesterly winds blowing over north India and snowfall in higher reaches of Himachal and Kashmir valley resulted in the cold wave condition in the region and the situation is likely to change in the next couple of days with the western disturbance. Meanwhile, cold day conditions will continue in Uttar Pradesh during next couple of days and fog and dense fog will occur over East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during next two days.

Fog, icy winds dot Chandigarh

With the mercury plummeting further to the lowest of the season at 1.2 degrees Celsius today, the city residents woke up to a thick fog cover and icy cold winds on the first day of the New Year, paralysing normal life as road, rail and air traffic remained disrupted today, with cold wave conditions showing no signs of relenting.

A thick cover of fog reduced the normal visibility range to 200 metres and it stayed that way till 11 am. ?The fog persisted today despite the strong winds, which is an unusual condition for the tricity and its neighbouring districts like Ambala, Patiala and Ropar, making it chillier. Visibility conditions were affected till 11 am due to this,? a senior official of the met department said.

The Jet Airways cancelled its to and fro flights from Chandigarh while all the remaining incoming and outgoing flights of Kingfisher, GoAir airlines and Indian Airlines from Chandigarh were also cancelled in the afternoon.

During the past four days, just one flight had taken off from Chandigarh airport, which had remained engulfed under thick fog.

New Delhi, Jan 3 (PTI) Over 30 people died in Uttar Pradesh due to cold wave as foggy conditions prevailed for the second successive day today in many parts of the northern region with some states also experiencing light showers.

As many as 33 people died due to intense cold conditions in UP since last night taking the death toll to 74 in the state this winter.

While six persons died in Mirzapur, five deaths were each reported from Ballia and Banda, four from Kanpur dehat, three from Muzaffarnagar, two each from Sonbhadra, Hamirpur, Fatehpur and Chandauli, and one each from Farukkhabad and Unnao, official sources said.

Meanwhile, a day after dense fog engulfed the region and caused power blackouts, flight and train disruptions, states like Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and some parts of Jammu and Kashmir recorded a slight rise in night temperature.

Shimla, Jan 3 (PTI) The cold wave in Himachal Pradesh intensified today after snowfall in the higher reaches and rain in the state capital and in the lower areas.

There were reports of snowfall from Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba and high peaks in Kullu since the morning.

A report from Keylong, district headquarters of Lahaul-Spiti, said about one-and-a-half inch of snow accumulated on roads there.

A report from Chamba said high altitude areas of Pangi-Bharmour witnessed snowfall since the morning while the tourist destination of Dalhousie saw snowflakes.

In the Queen of the Hills, the mercury plummeted after light rain in the morning with the day temperature being recorded at 11.7 degree celsius in comparison to 17.2 degrees yesterday.

In Sundernagar, the day temperature settled at 19.1 degrees, 13.8 degrees in Bhuntar and 14.8 degrees in Dharamsala, the Met department said.

Jaipur, Jan 3 (PTI) Parts of Rajasthan today received light rains even as slight rise in mercury was recorded in the state, Met officials said.

Mount Abu recorded maximum rain of 9 mm followed by Barmer and Jalore at 5.6 and 4.2 mm respectively.

Pilani recorded 1.2 mm rainfall followed by Sikar, Churu, Jodhpur and Bikaner (1 mm each). Kota, Jaipur, Chittorgarh, Ganganagar and Dabok received drizzle.

Meanwhile, Ganganagar was the coldest place in the state with a minimum temperature of 5.6 degree Celsius followed by Mount Abu at 7 deg C.

Churu, Pilani and Jaipur shivered at 7.3, 9.5 and 11.8 deg C, while Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Ajmer and Kota settled at a low of 12, 12.2, 13, 13.2 and 13.5 deg C respectively, the officials said.

Light rain is likely to continue in parts of the state which will dip night temperatures.

Cold abates in Punjab and Haryana

Chandigarh, Jan 9 (PTI) Cold conditions abated in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh today, with mercury rising up by three to four notches above normal, although dense fog continued to affect normal life in the region.
With 1.6 degree Celsius, Amritsar, continued to be the coldest place in Punjab, the Met office said here.
In Haryana, minimum temperature was 5.3 C at Ambala, one degree less than normal, it added.
Except at few places, visibility in Punjab and Haryana remained at zero level because of thick fog.

Fog, cold disrupts life in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Jan 9 (PTI) Fog and intense cold conditions disrupted normal life in Rajasthan affecting flights and traffic on the highway.
Due to the fog and poor visibility flights were rescheduled at the Sanganer airport, Aiport Director Anuj Agrawal said.
Traffic on highways was also affected and many roadways buses got delayed by two-three hours.
Phalodi was the coldest place in the state with a minimum temperature of 2 degrees Celsius, a Met official said today.
Fog and ground frost appeared early this morning in Jaipur, Kota, Bundi, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Ganganagar.
The capital city Jaipur, which was engulfed in fog till late in the morning, recorded a minimum temperature of 3.3 degree Celsius, five degrees below normal, which is seasons' lowest.
Jaisalmer and Sawaimadhopur had an identical low of 4.3 deg C, while Bundi recorded a minimum of 5.2 deg C.

Cold conditions worsened in JK

Srinagar, Jan 9 (PTI) Cold conditions worsened further in Jammu and Kashmir today as mercury further dipped by a few notches in the state.
Pahalgam, a hill resort in south Kashmir, was the coldest place in Kashmir as the night temperature dipped to minus 7.0 deg Celsius against minus 6.8 deg Celsius yesterday, Met office said.
Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, reeled under intense cold as the minimum temperature recorded was minus 4.2 degrees C against minus 3.6 deg C yesterday.
There was no let up in intense cold in other parts of the valley. Qazigund registered a low of minus 4.4 deg C, Kokernag had a minimum of minus 4.1 deg C, while Kupwara recorded a low of minus 3.8 deg C.
Leh recorded a low of minus 20.6 deg C and Kargil minus 19.4 deg C.

Minimum temperature increases in Bihar

Patna, Jan 9 (PTI) With minimum temperature increasing today in Bihar, people got a little respite from the cold wave situation in the state where 21 cold-related deaths occurred this season.
"Today there is marked improvement in the chilly cold conditions following increase in minimum temperature, though icy winds continued to sweep the state from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir," Met department officials said.
The minimum temperature in Patna further rose to 6.4 degree Celsius from yesterday's 5.7 degree Celsius bringing much relief to Patnaites, they said.
Similarly, the minimum temperature in Bhagalpur and Gaya rose to 12.2 degree Celsius and 6.5 degree Celsius respectively, they said, adding that the temperature in Purnia, however, dipped to 7.2 degree Celsius from yesterday's 9.3 degree Celsius.
At least 21 people have so far died during the season in the state.

Fog continues to disrupt train movement

New Delhi, Jan 9 (PTI) Fog in many parts of North India continued to disrupt train movement today with railways rescheduling six trains.
The North East Express was among the trains rescheduled.
Railway officials said over four dozen trains including all Rajdhanis were running late.
The railways have already announced cancellation of 19 trains till January 31 in view of the foggy weather.

There was no respite from the bone-biting chill as cold conditions intensified in most parts of North India with mercury recording a drop of up to three notches below normal.

The icy winds blowing in the region are expected to continue for two-three days more. The met officials predict rain and thundershowers in the next 48 hours.

Amritsar was the coldest place in plains recording a minimum temperature of 1.4 degrees Celsius. While

Adampur and Chandigarh recorded a low of 6 degrees Celsius, Bathinda registered a minimum temperature of 6.4 degrees Celsius.

Night temperature in Kashmir and Ladakh showed an upward trend, while Jammu recorded a drop in mercury at 4 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal. The winter capital of J&K had recorded a minimum of 5.3 degrees Celsius yesterday. Banihal shivered at a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius. The night temperature in Leh was minus 20 degrees Celsius against minus 21.4 degrees yesterday.

In Haryana, Ambala recorded a minimum of 6 degrees Celsius. In HP, the higher reaches of the state continued to reel under sub-zero temperatures. After 2007, this has been the worst cold in the region. As per weather experts at the met department in Chandigarh, in 2009, the minimum temperature in various districts of Punjab hovered around 4-6 ?C, while this year, the minimum temperature came down to 0 degrees in several cities. The severe cold wave conditions have hit life in the region. Daily power cuts for four-six hours have added to the misery of people who can?t use heaters or blowers.

?The power situation is pathetic. We are unable to even get hot water for shower in such cold weather?, rued Komal, a Ludhiana resident.

Also, poultry and dairy farming has been affected as the production of eggs and milk has come down by 10 per cent. Experts have warned farmers to provide warm environment to the cattle and poultry birds to avoid diseases.

Dr SS Nagra of the livestock production management department of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, said animals were suffering from respiratory problems due to the biting cold. ?Their immunity comes down and energy requirement increases. The production and growth in poultry also comes down. To save animals/birds from the cold, the farmers need to provide them warm atmosphere,? he said. Only for hosiery manufacturers has the weather been ?excellent? as their previous year?s stocks have also been cleared.

Chhatar Singh, met director at Chandigarh, said intense cold wave had gripped the region and no relief was foreseen for at least two-three days. But people would get relief from dense fog by tomorrow. ?The region would witness a partially cloudy sky with possibility of rain and thundershowers in the next 48 hours. The cold wave would continue,? said another met official.
