At least six people have died after consuming meat of Siberian birds in a village in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh Saturday, an official said.


?Apparently, the Siberian birds had fed on poisoned fish,? a spokesman of the state home department said.

?Fishes in village ponds sometimes die on account of some poisonous substance which takes its toll on birds or human beings consuming such fishes.?

Since the victims were found to have been heavily intoxicated, the official did not rule out the possibility of ?adverse impact of the country hooch?.

Azamgarh hooch toll mounts to 14; two liquor sellers held

Varanasi (PTI): Three more persons died in the Azamgarh hooch tragedy on Monday raising the death toll to 14, even as police arrested two persons in connection with the sale of illicit liquor.

Gurudarshan Singh, IG (Varanasi zone) told PTI that Uttam Pasi, Subhash Yadav and Dharam Raj succumbed to spurious liquor this evening. Of the 17 people undergoing treatment in Azamgarh district hospital and Kabirchaura hospital at Varanasi, the condition of four was said to be serious.

A group of villagers at Irni under Bardah police station had consumed liquor on Saturday evening after hunting migrant Siberian birds.

SSP, Ramit Sharma said as per preliminary investigation they had died to consumption of spurious liquor. Whether birds' meat caused the death would be confirmed only after the viscera report is available.

Meanwhile, police arrested Phoolmati and Prem Shankar Dube, who had allegedly supplied liquor to the victims.

A hunt is on for main accused and liquor shop owners Chandan, Chandradev and Brahmadev, the IG said.
