Health officials are keeping a close watch on a Delhi resident who arrived from Ghana on a flight in which a passenger tested positive for the deadly Ebola virus ravaging west Africa. The man?s two housemates are also under surveillance.

The Dwarka resident ? HT is withholding his name ? is being monitored since July 21, two days after he reached the Capital, but has not shown any symptoms of the highly contagious haemorrhagic fever.

?We were alerted by the WHO about him being exposed to the disease. His co-passenger on the flight had tested positive for Ebola. Our surveillance units tracked him down and also examined people living with him,? a health ministry official said.

?Since none of them have shown any symptoms so far, we didn?t get them tested. We have asked them to watch out for any symptoms,? said the official...

My understanding about testing is that early tests may give a false negative. There needs to be a threshold viral load in the bloodstream. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

A 25-year-old man from Theni, who arrived in Chennai by flight from Guinea, has been transferred to the isolation ward of the hospital.

In a suspected case of the deadly Ebola virus, health officials on Saturday night detained and placed under observation a 25-year-old man who arrived from the Republic of Guinea at the Chennai Airport. He has been kept in the isolation ward of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where his health is being closely monitored by a team of doctors and staff who have taken the precautionary measures recommended.

“As of now the patient is asymptomatic. A blood sample to Pune (National Institute of Virology) and the results expected within the next 24 to 48 hours. We are monitoring his temperature every four hours. If the blood results are negative for Ebola virus, we would transfer him to a local facility near his home but will continue to incubate and monitor him for a period of 20 days," the doctor added.

First Ebola scare at Chennai airport: Theni native hospitalised in city

According to airport police, the man, Parthiban, aged 31, a native of Theni, returned here by an Emirates flight from Dubai at 0200 hrs. He had high temperature when he was screened by health department personnel as part of the measures being taken by the Centre to screen for Ebola virus victims at all airports in the country.

He was immediately quarantined in a room and his blood samples were taken and sent to the well known chemical laboratory Kings Institute in the city.

As officials manning the ebola scanning section at the city airport were tiding over another slow night, they were thrown into a state of alarm when a nurse called them in with a possible 'hit', "He had a rash and red eyes, besides the usual flu symptoms. Since he is returning from one of the six most affected regions, we alerted the health department and sent him to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital," said an AAI official at the airport.

Patient shows no signs of Ebola, discharged from Chennai GH

A 25-year-old man from Theni, who arrived in Chennai by flight from Guinea, was transferred to the isolation ward of the hospital.

The 25-year-old man who was being monitored in an isolation ward at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for Ebola, was discharged on Sunday afternoon.

Doctors said his vital signs and blood tests were normal and he showed no signs of the virus. "He wanted to go to his hometown in Theni district and visit his father who is ill. As he was asymptomatic, we sent him home in a 108 ambulance. However, he will be monitored by local health authorities there," said Dr. S. Raghunandan, deputy medical superintendent at the hospital.

The man, who arrived on Saturday night from Guinea via Dubai, had been taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.He was kept in the isolation ward of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where his health was being closely monitored by a team of doctors and staff who have taken the precautionary measures recommended...

Mumbai man who returned from Nigeria gets admitted for suspected Ebola virus

MUMBAI: A 31-year-old Vasai resident who returned from a West African country last month has voluntarily admitted himself to a civic hospital for suspected Ebola virus.

The man arrived from Nigeria on July 28 when the screening of passengers arriving from West African countries had not started at Mumbai airport..

A 28-year-old Indian engineer who was working in Nigeria is Delhi?s first suspected Ebola case. He is now in an isolation ward at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi, from where his blood samples were sent to Pune?s National Institute of Virology for tests.

The government went into tizzy Sunday after the control room got a call from the engineer?s brother, himself a doctor, claiming his brother had Ebola. ?We got a call from Jhansi from his brother saying his brother was landing at Delhi airport and that he had Ebola,? a control room source told this newspaper.

The engineer, who works with a construction company in Nigeria, was arriving on a Qatar Airways flight. He was immediately tracked and quarantined in an isolation ward at RML. Sources said while his initial Elisa test had been negative, but his blood samples were sent to NIV Pune for further confirmation. He has also tested positive for malaria. The results from the NIV Pune tests are expected by Tuesday evening. Even if the test is negative, he will remain under close watch as the incubation period of the virus is 21 days...

In a statement on Monday, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan affirmed ?there is no Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in India.? He added that India is taking necessary precautions for prompt treatment and subsequent monitoring.

After the chaos over traveller from Nigeria showing symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection at the IGI Airport Saturday, Vardhan added ?There is no reason for getting worried over the odd case of a visitor to the country arriving in an indisposed condition. We have all the mechanisms in place for prompt treatment and subsequent monitoring.? The traveller was tested negative for EVD at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

Passenger from Nigeria tests negative for Ebola in Delhi
Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan orders another inter-ministerial review

A traveller from Nigeria manifesting symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection at the IGI Airport on Saturday was taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and tested for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). He tested negative.

The two passengers who reached Chennai on 9th August, 2014 i.e. 27 year old male who travelled from Guinea and a 40 year old male who travelled from Liberia are in good health and they are under observation.

The high level of alertness at points of entry, coupled with the self-reporting by passengers, is leading to satisfactory results in the government?s surveillance on the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. On August 8, World Health Organisation (WHO) had declared a public health emergency of international concern after an abnormal rise in the incidence of the dreaded infection this year. Within hours the Ministry unravelled its advanced surveillance and tracking system. A 24-hour helpline was also opened.

Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Health Minister, ordered another review meeting today between officers of the Health, Home Affairs, External Affairs, Civil Aviation and National Disaster Management Authority, and representatives of World Health Organisation. The meeting was chaired by the Health Secretary, Mr Lov Verma. This is the second inter-ministerial meeting in less than a week.

?There is no reason for getting worried over the odd case of a visitor to the country arriving in an indisposed condition. We have all the mechanisms in place for prompt treatment and subsequent monitoring,? Dr Harsh Vardhan said.

The Minister also directed that all technical updates on EVD, with reference to sample collection, storage and transportation, tracing and contact management, case management and notification control in hospital settings be loaded on the website of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

He reiterated, ?There is no case of EVD in India.?

The test report of the third suspect, a 79-year-old man from Nigeria, is awaited. A statement issued by the health ministry on Sunday stated that he continues to be under observation at RML Hospital.

Passengers from Nigeria admitted to Dr RML Hospital for observation 5235 passengers screened at 7 airports


Two passengers, aged 24 and 27, both Nigerian Nationals travelling from Nigeria were found having fever at the time of screening at Delhi Airport. They have been admitted to Dr RML Hospital for observation.
Mandatory reporting of passengers from affected countries is in place. Since its inception on 10th August, 2014, 5235 passengers have been screened at the Airports at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Trivandrum and Kochi.

It is reiterated that as on date, there is no confirmed or even suspect case of Ebola Virus Disease in India.

WHO has reported a total of 1975 cases and 1069 deaths (as on 11th August 2014) due to Ebola Virus Disease from affected countries. Country-wise break up is as under:

The call centre at the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare received 45 calls in the past 24 hours. The queries from public, related to signs and symptoms of the disease and risk of travel were addressed adequately.

9207 passengers screened for Ebola at airports since 10 August

WHO: Air travel, even from Ebola-affected countries, is low-risk for Ebola transmission


Since its inception on 10.08.2014, 9207 health cards of passengers from Ebola Virus Disease affected countries have been returned by Immigration Department (151 on 10.08.2014; 497 on 11.08.2014 and 1034 on 12.08.2014; 1407 on 13.08.2014; 2146 on 14.08.2014; 2441 on 15.08.2014 and 1531 on 16.08.2014) to the Airport Health Officers of the Airports at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Trivandrum and Kochi. All these passengers have been screened at the concerned Airports.
Three Nigerian Nationals, who arrived in Delhi today morning, aged 4 (male), 37 (female) and 79 (male), having fever at the time of screening were admitted to Dr RML Hospital. Their tests are being done at National Centre for Disease Control, Delhi. In addition, another Indian National, 32 year old male, who returned from Nigeria, belonging to Dist Durg, Chhattisgarh, has been admitted to Bhilai Hospital. His samples are also being tested at NCDC.

10194 passengers screened for Ebola at airports since 10 August

Quarantine cum Isolation Health Facility at Delhi Airport made functional


Since its inception on 10.08.2014, 10194 health cards of passengers from Ebola Virus Disease affected countries have been returned by Immigration Department (151 on 10.08.2014; 497 on 11.08.2014 and 1034 on 12.08.2014; 1407 on 13.08.2014; 2146 on 14.08.2014; 2441 on 15.08.2014, 1531 on 16.08.2014 and 1987 on 17.08.2014) to the Airport Health Officers of the Airports at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Trivandrum, Kolkata and Kochi. All these passengers have been screened at the concerned Airports.

The samples of two Nigerian nationals (aged 4 and 37) admitted yesterday to Dr RML Hospital have been tested negative. The Indian national admitted to Bhilai Hospital earlier has also tested negative in tests done at NCDC. The 79 year old male Nigerian national continues to be under observation at Dr RML Hospital. His test reports are awaited.

The Quarantine cum Isolation Health Facility at Delhi Airport has been made functional and all suspect cases detected at Delhi Airport would be admitted to this facility. Since yesterday evening, 5 citizens of Indian origin aged 38 (M), 38(F), 7(M), 2 (F) and 31(F) have been admitted to this facility. All of them have been found negative for EVD in tests done at NCDC.

The Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) is tracking such passengers, the details of which are provided to them by the Airport Health Organization. Today, 90 passengers were enrolled for follow up in their respective States through State IDSP units. As on date, a cumulative number of 267 passengers are being tracked. Most of them are in the States of Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The Control Room in the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has received 557 calls since its inception on 09/08/2014 morning and only 17 calls were received in the past 24 hours. Most of the callers have sought information on signs and symptoms of the disease and travel related risk of acquiring the infection.

WHO has reported a total of 2127 cases and 1145 deaths (as on 13th August 2014) due to Ebola Virus Disease from affected countries. Country-wise break up is as under:

Arrangements for screening arrivals and subsequent tracking reviewed

Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Health Minister, has expressed satisfaction with the infrastructure in place at all entry points to the country to detect people arriving with symptoms of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

World Health Organization had sounded an international emergency on August 8 but before that the Minister had placed India?s surveillance and tracking systems on full alert.

?Till now, 12,257 passengers have been screened at various international airports. Several departments of the central governments are working in tandem with state governments to ensure total surveillance. I personally inspected the arrangements at Bangalore International Airport on Thursday,? the Minister said.

Reports appearing in some media about a Nigerian national being testing ?positive? for EVD in New Delhi?s Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital have been denied by the Minister.

?Our vigilant officials did indeed send a person to RML Hospital. His blood samples were sent to National Centre for Disease Control. (NCDC) and National Institute of Virology, Pune. We are assured that they tested negative and there is no cause for worry,? Dr Harsh Vardhan said.

The samples were subjected to Antigen Elisa and RT-PCR tests. In addition, scientists at the Pune facility carried out sequencing and all tests confirmed that the Nigerian national was free of the dreaded Ebola virus.

Dr Harsh Vardhan reassured the people that there is no cause for panic. ?We have systems in place for tracking anybody with remotest symptoms of EVD throughout the 21-day danger period. Luckily the disease is not air borne and therefore the infrastructure of prevention will easily arrest its spread?.

Meanwhile, WHO has reported that worldwide 2,127 EVD cases have been detected till August 13 and the total fatalities is 1,145.
