India - Scrub typhus range spreading from forests to urban locales

CHANDIGARH: With its entry in the Tricity, scrub typhus -- a bacterial disease, which is known to be prevalent in beaches and forests -- has now starting spreading extensively in the Tricity, with four confirmed cases being reported every day. The disease has been reported from various regions of India, especially Himalayan regions including Shimla, besides Assam and West Bengal.

"However, an interesting finding is that many of theses cases reported in PGI are from the urban parts of the Tricity and from high socio-economic class," said Dr Sethi.
The PGI is working on involving epidemiologists and also tracking patients to find out about the spread of the disease from forests and scrub areas to urban locales.
