A proposal to provide 50 per cent subsidy for poultry feed under study Owners may get 50 per cent subsidy on chicken feed

# Poultry industry suffered a loss of Rs. 200 cr. because of bird flu threat: Minister
# Insurance coverage to be provided for sheep and goats
# 187 veterinary doctors recruited and 250 more to be appointed soon

Gulbarga -- The State Government has come out with a novel plan to assist poultry farms in the State which had suffered extensive loss because of slump in the sale of poultry in the beginning of this year because of the threat of avian flu by providing 50 per cent subsidy to the poultry feeds to an extent of about Rs. 2 crore.

Animal Husbandry Minister Revu Naik told The Hindu here on Saturday that as per the rough estimate, poultry farm owners had suffered a loss of over Rs. 200 crore because of the slump in the sale of chicken and other poultry products, including eggs, because of the threat of avian flu. The Government, taking into consideration the loss suffered by farm owners, had decided to provide 50 per cent subsidy on chicken feed to all farm owners. This subsidy would be available on one-time basis for up to 10,000 chicks in each farm.

Mr. Naik said his proposal for providing assistance to the poultry farm owners was discussed in detail at the recent Cabinet meeting and given approval. The proposal was pending before the Finance Department for its final approval and release of the amount.

Insurance
He said another proposal of his Ministry to extend insurance coverage to the sheep and goat was in the final stages of approval with the Finance Department giving its formal approval and the Government had issued a notification to bring 9.40 lakh sheep and goats under insurance cover. Mr. Naik said he had conducted high-level review of his department with senior officials in Bangalore to identify grey areas that required immediate attention to improve the functioning of the department.

Shortage of medicines
At the meeting, the officials brought to his notice the shortage of medicines in veterinary hospitals in a few districts and orders had been issued to the Secretary of the department to release funds to buy the medicines.

Mr. Naik said there were 837 vacancies of veterinary doctors in the State. Of this, interviews were conducted to fill 187 posts and the selected doctors had reported to duty.

The recruitment of another 250 veterinary doctors would start soon and the remaining vacancies would be filled in phases. A decision had been taken to take back 34 veterinary doctors posted as Executive Officers of different taluk panchayats in the State.

He had discussed this with the Rural Development Minister C.M. Udasi and he had agreed to relieve them from the post of Executive Officers and send them back to their parent departments to fill the vacancies.

Mr. Naik said the sheep and goat farm and rearing centre housed in a 4,000-acre land at Chalakeri in Chitrudurga district would be given a new lease of life. At present, there were 200 sheep in the sprawling 4,000-acre centre and a master plan would be drawn to develop this centre as model rearing centre of sheep and goat in the country.

Boost to dairying
The Government had launched another programme to give a boost to the dairying activities by extending an assistance of Rs. 10 lakh to each of the 27 districts to provide subsidy to registered dairies having at least 100 milch animals and with a 20-acre land.

To increase the production of milk, particularly in districts such as Gulbarga, where the production of milk was abysmally low, KMF Managing Directors had been asked to support the efforts of the people to start more milk societies and open new milk routes in rural areas.
