Friday April 7 2006 13:41 IST
VIJAYAWADA: Scores of citizens in Chittinagar, Brahmamgari Matham and Anjaneya Vagu have been admitted to various hospitals in the city following the outbreak of viral fever.
Though the officials have not confirmed, the diagnosis points out to Chikun Gunya, caused by viruses vectored by mosquitoes. The authorities have sent 150 blood samples to Institute of Preventive Medicine, Hyderabad for diagnosis.
Ten persons were admitted to the Sk Rajasahab Maternity Hospital at Chittinagar today with complaints of vomiting, recurring high fever and debilitating joint pains.
?My two daughters have been ailing for the last three days. We took them to a private doctor but the treatment did not yield any result. They have become very weak from last night,? said Sk Rasool, an employee at an iron hardware shop in One-Town.
His daughters have been on a drip from the morning and they have not touched a morsel for the past three days. Similar is the case of B Janardhana Rao, a daily wage labourer of Anjeneya Vagu centre.
?The pain is excruciating at the joints of the limbs. The pain subsides after administering of a pain-killer. But the pain soon returns,? he said. Local corporator Kollu Sudharani said the people have been suffering for the last 10 days.
Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Guljar toured the affected areas today and directed the medical teams to take immediate corrective measures.
He also directed the officials to send water samples for quality testing. Chief medical officer G Venkata Rao, chief engineer Dora and others accompanied the commissioner.
Meanwhile, CPM leaders led by Ch Babu Rao, who visited the affected areas alleged that the corporation officials had totally failed in reacting on time to the crisis. They said the corrective measures were not in place.
