Health dept to chalk out plan to contain chikungunya in 2008
T'PURAM: After the continuous onslaught of chikungunya for the past two years, the Health Department in association with Arogya Keralam has decided to chalk out a comprehensive plan for the prevention and control of the disease in 2008.
The draft of the action plan has already been prepared and it will be implemented in three phases identifying three core strategies using three interventions. The final plan will be published by this month-end.
The three core strategies include a surveillance system, integrated vector management and monitoring and supervision.
The action plan will be implemented in three phases; the first between January and March, the second between April and June and the third between June and December.
As per the action plan for fever alert surveillance, syndromic approach will be used for identification and reporting of fever cases. All health workers and grassroot-level functionaries will be given training on this.
Computer with internet facility will be provided to PHCs, Block PHCs andCHCs. Integrated vector management will focus on entomological surveillance including larval surveys at ward, block and district levels.
As part of capacity building measures, one Sentinel Surveillance hospital will be set up in each district. The major highlight will be the formation of Rapid Response Emergency Vector control teams at the district level.
Dissemination of management protocol and establishing treatment teams at CHC and block PHC levels are also being planned. The capacity building exercises are expected to be completed by February.
The government medical colleges will be assigned the charges of various districts. A state-level task force will be constituted for monitoring the programme.
For monitoring and supervision at the block and ward level, block panchayat president, grama panchayat president, health standing committee chairpersons and ward members will be entrusted.
This will act as a social audit system for ensuring prompt reporting, regular surveillance and control measures.
Environmental management methods and minor engineering works like closure of choke pits will be executed in all the hospitals and other public places toreduce mosquito breeding.
The existing surveillance system will be integrated at the district and state levels. The action plan is being charted out with the support of medical education sector, health service and organisations like IMA, KGMCTA and KGMOA.
