The government had already banned export of onion and now now the import duty has been brought down to zero from five per cent.

"The customs duty on onions has been brought down to zero," Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla told reporters here today.

The step comes amid a sharp rise in the price of onions up to Rs 70-85 per kg in retail markets across the country from just Rs 35-40 a few days ago on account of damage suffered by crops in the key-producing states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and a few Southern states due to excessive rains, which has led to large-scale hoarding by some traders.

India to revisit cotton export ban to keep onions flowing

Sujay Mehdudia

NEW DELHI: India is understood to have told Pakistan that it is ready to lift the ban on cotton exports if the latter resumes its onion exports through rail and land routes.

Official sources in the Commerce Ministry said this was conveyed to Islamabad by the External Affairs Ministry. ?The Indian side has conveyed to the Pakistani counterparts that it was ready to revisit the cotton export ban and ceiling issues, if the gesture is reciprocated by Pakistan through the removal of the ban on the movement of onion,? a senior official said.

On January 6, Pakistan banned onion exports to India by land. This pushed up onion prices once again to the Rs.60-70-a-kg range. Around 300 trucks carrying 3,000 tonnes of onion to India had reached Wagah near Amritsar, but were not allowed to cross the border.

Food inflation inches up marginally to 8.76 per cent

STAFF WRITER 12:3 HRS IST
New Delhi, Apr 28 (PTI) Food inflation inched up marginally to 8.76 per cent for the week ended April 16 on the back of rising prices of fruits, protein-based items and onions.

Food inflation stood at 8.74 per cent in the previous week. This is the second consecutive week when the rate of price rise of food items has gone up after a period of moderation in February and March.

The latest rise, although marginal, will put more pressure on the government, which has described inflation as one of the major challenges facing the economy.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had expressed concern about rising prices, especially of food items, and said the country needs to do more for ensuring the food security of its citizens.

During the week under review, fruits became dearer by 28.
