The outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Assam has taken a worrying turn, with the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) reporting 13 deaths linked to the disease in the past three months.

According to hospital authorities, a total of 57 encephalitis patients have been admitted to GMCH during this period. As of Friday, 47 patients are currently undergoing treatment at the state’s premier medical institution.

In the past 24 hours alone, 10 new JE cases were admitted, indicating a sharp surge in infections. However, there is some relief as 10 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged from the hospital.

Health officials are on alert as the monsoon season creates favourable conditions for the spread of vector-borne diseases like Japanese Encephalitis. The state government has urged people to take precautionary measures, especially in rural and flood-prone areas where mosquito breeding is rampant.​..

​Guwahati: In a concerning development, Assam has reported 12 additional deaths from Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in the past week, bringing the state’s total fatalities from the disease this year to 26, government sources told TSG.

The bigger concern is that the virus has now spread to 33 of 35 districts, with only Dima Hasao and Hailakandi remaining unaffected. The state government has sent alerts to all district health authorities.

Dr. Lakshmanan, Mission Director of the National Health Mission (NHM), Assam, has raised concerns about the ongoing JE situation in the state, stating that Assam remains one of the most severely affected regions in the country. With over 50% of India’s JE caseload being reported from the state, officials are urging heightened public awareness and early detection to save lives.​..

Imphal: A 15-year-old boy from Phaknung Awang Leikai in Manipur’s Imphal East district has died of Japanese Encephalitis (JE), officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The boy, identified as Khundongbam Elan, son of Khundongbam Ibomcha, tested positive for JE on August 2 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal. He died on August 4 while undergoing treatment, according to a statement issued by the Phaknung Social Youths’ Club (PSYC).​..

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS) A total of 224 cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) -- a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes -- have been reported from 11 states in 2025, the government informed the Parliament on Friday.

In a written reply to a query in Lok Sabha, Anupriya Patel, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, shared the number of recorded cases of encephalitis -- inflammation of the brain, often due to bacterial or viral infection -- in the country during the last five years.

Compared to the last five years, the year 2025, till June 30, experienced the lowest number of JE cases.

"The 11 states with JE encephalitis cases in 2025 are Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Manipur, Meghalaya, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal," Patel said.

While Assam saw the highest cases of JE encephalitis -- 127 --, Uttar Pradesh, with just 2 cases, was the lowest.​..

​Shillong, Sep 10: Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh reported that the state has seen a 65 per cent rise in Japanese Encephalitis (JE) cases, from 89 cases detected in 2023-2024 to 147 in 2024-2025.

To combat the disease, the government is taking various steps, including inter-sectoral meetings between departments and districts, especially in high-risk areas, she told the Assembly. The government is also sensitising Veterinary Department officials and involving them in entomological surveillance and vector control teams. Additionally, ASHAs will be included to create awareness about the disease.​..

Over the past month, at least 14 children under the age of 15 have died after being admitted to hospitals in Nagpur, Maharashtra, and Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. Doctors say the cases appear to be acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), a term often used when the brain suddenly becomes inflamed or stops functioning, but without a confirmed cause.

According to doctors in both districts, the affected children came to hospitals with very high fever. Within hours, many deteriorated rapidly. Some fell unconscious within 24 hours of admission.​..

​Kerala is on high alert after a surge in cases of cases of amoebic encephalitis (brain fever) — popularly called the “brain-eating amoeba.” So far, the state has reported a total of 104 cases of amoebic encephalitis (brain fever), News18 reported.

State health minister Veena George said 23 patients have so far died due to the infection. Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts are among the most affected areas, with Kozhikode and Malappuram also reporting a surge in cases.​..

A 58-year-old woman from Kerala’s Kozhikode district died of amoebic meningoencephalitis at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on Saturday, November 22. The deceased, Sarasu, hailed from Thurayoor in Payyoli and had been receiving treatment at the hospital for the past month.

According to reports, two more patients, including another Kozhikode native, are currently undergoing treatment at the medical college for the infection.​..

10-year-old boy contracts amoebic infection in Alappuzha, source unclear

ALAPPUZHA: A 10-year-old boy from Varanad in Cherthala Thanneermukkom has been confirmed of amoebic meningoencephalitis. The authorities of the health department informed that the condition of the boy undergoing treatment at Kottayam Medical College Hospital is out of danger. The source of the disease is not clear.

The boy, who was abroad with his parents reached his hometown two months ago. He later stayed at his mother’s house in Pallippuram and in the house in Varanad. The boy, who developed uneasiness, was first admitted at a private hospital. He was shifted to Kottayam Medical College after seeing the symptoms. The health department has issued an alert in the incident. A special alert has been issued in Thanneermukkom and Pallipuram, where the child lived.​..
