Family farm in Freeburg reports case of bird flu

A rough chapter faces the Funk Family Farms in Freeburg, Illinois, as a case of bird flu was confirmed by the family farm on Monday.
“I started talking to veterinarians, and I called the USDA yesterday, and they came out and collected dead birds,” said Joel Funk, Funk Family Farms. “I got the results last night, positive avian influenza outbreak.”

Egg sales are halted, and the remaining will be chickens unpopulated. Funk shared theories with FOX 2 on how his chickens may have contracted the bird flu.
“It can hitch a ride on particulates, so spittle or dirt or dust,” he said. “Typically, it’s found amongst wildlife. A bird will come in, and land and pass it to one of my birds, and that bird will go into the coop at night and share its breath with everyone else.”

“It’s not easy watching a bunch of birds that you raised from chicks just not be here,” Funk said. “The harder part is watching them suffer. My favorite chicken died yesterday, and I only had about six of them that had names, and she was named Bobbi.”
