The DuPage County Health Department announced today that there are now five human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in DuPage County.

Those affected by WNV are in their 40s to 70s, and are located in Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Lombard and Villa Park. One of those five cases resulted in a fatality related to West Nile virus infection...

West Nile virus cited in death of Elgin man

A 64-year-old Elgin man infected with West Nile virus died last week, making him the first person in Kane County to die from the mosquito-transmitted virus, the Kane County Health Department announced Thursday.

His was the first human case of West Nile virus reported in the county this year.

According to the Aug. 19 surveillance report, mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile virus in 10 Kane county communities, including Batavia, Campton Hills and Elburn.

Three dead birds, including one in South Elgin, also tested positive.

The West Nile virus has claimed the life of an elderly person in southern suburban Cook County, officials announced Wednesday.

So far, there has been one death and 58 human cases of the virus in suburban Cook, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health. More than 360 mosquito pools and seven birds also have tested positive.

Cook County health officials said the person who died was between the ages of 70-79 and lived in the county's southern district. Officials no longer disclose the gender of WNV patients and provide only the age range...

Third West Nile death reported in DuPage

The West Nile virus has now claimed at least four lives in Illinois, three of them DuPage County residents.

The Health Department announced Monday that the mosquito-borne infection had sickened 25 residents ? 20 percent of the statewide count ? and caused the death of a third person in the county.

Privacy regulations prevent public health agencies from providing much individual detail about the viral activity, but the county agency said those who have been diagnosed with the virus live in Naperville as well as Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Villa Park and Westmont.

As the week began, 125 cases had been reported statewide...

A Chicago firefighter died Thursday evening from an infection of the West Nile Virus, a department official said.
Lt. Thomas Flahive, with the department since November 1989, was bitten by a mosquito two weeks ago and shortly thereafter began feeling flu-like symptoms, according to department spokesman Larry Langford.
Flahive was examined and admitted to an area hospital where his condition worsened.
