WILL COUNTY, Ill. — Health officials in Illinois reported Tuesday the first human case of West Nile Virus this year in Will County.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said the person is in their 70s and began to feel symptoms in July.

This is at least the fifth human case of West Nile in Illinois.​..

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) warns that West Nile Virus remains a serious threat, especially for older individuals and those with weakened immune systems, with nine non-fatal cases reported in the state so far.
IDPH urges residents to take precautions against mosquito bites, as there is no specific treatment or vaccine for West Nile Virus, which continues to affect various counties in Illinois.​..

McHenry County health officials confirm 1st West Nile Virus-related death since 2018

MCHENRY COUNTY, Ill. — Health officials in McHenry County announced Friday that a resident in the county who had been diagnosed with West Nile Virus (WNV) has died.

According to the McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH), the individual who succumbed to the illness was in their 80s and had developed symptoms in August.

Health officials said it is the first WNV-related death in McHenry County since 2018.

Currently, 34 human cases of WNV have been reported in Illinois since the start of the year, and 2,764 positive mosquito batches have been identified, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

In 2023, the state saw 119 human WNV cases and six human deaths.

In late August, the IDPH announced the state’s first WNV-related death of the year.​..
