EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
The infected bird was found dead in an area far from any poultry or other captive birds in October 2021. The Icelandic Veterinary Authority was informed about the positive results of AI testing performed by the FLI in Germany on 4 April 2022. The bird had been brought to Germany in connection with a special research project concerning the white-tailed eagle.

Bird Flu Confirmed In Iceland: What You Should Know (Your Cat Is Safe)
Published April 19, 2022
Words by
Alice Poggio

Bird flu has been confirmed in wild birds in Iceland. The announcement comes from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Administration (MAST). Bird flu has been diagnosed in a white-fronted goose by Hörnafjörður, in a wild goose on Strandakirkja, by Suðurstrandarvegur, and in a raven on Skeiðar in Árnessýsla.

Chief Veterinarian Sigurborg Daðadóttir outlines her worries to RÚV: “Infection must be quite widespread since it has been found in three wild birds of different species all over the country”.

An announcement from MAST states that on the farm where the raven was found, some chickens presented symptoms and were killed. Samples from the chickens were collected. Although the virus found in the wild birds has been confirmed to be of the H5 type, it is not yet known what its pathogenicity is, and the results from foreign laboratories are pending.

Sigurborg’s concern is that the results might indicate that it is the H5N1 variant. “This is a harmful variety that is now prevalent in Europe, we are afraid that this is the type that is here and it is contagious”. If this were to be the case, it would be the first time it has been diagnosed in chickens here.
Dead gannets spotted on webcam

Webcams in Eldey, home to one of the largest gannet settlements in the world, show scattered dead gannets, and the number seems to increase as days pass.

Sigurður Harðarson, an electronics engineer, set up webcams on Eldey fourteen years ago and has been monitoring the situation. Vísir reports...

Bird Flu Widespread in Wild Birds in Iceland
Jelena Ćirić
April 25, 2022

Bird flu was confirmed in eight out of 15 samples that were taken from wild birds in Iceland last week, Iceland’s Food and Veterinary Authority (MAST) announced. MAST has encouraged farmers of domestic fowl and other bird owners to take measures to prevent infection among their birds. The risk of infection to humans and other animals is, however, considered very low.

The eight positive samples processed last week were from three different regions of the country. Three were from gannets found in Njarðvík and Grindavík, Southwest Iceland; three from gannets found on Snæfellsnes peninsula, West Iceland; one from a greylag goose in Akureyri, North Iceland; and one from a great black-backed gull in Húsavík (also in North Iceland). The first positive samples among wild birds were confirmed earlier this month...

Confirm harmful strains of bird flu in Iceland

Matvælastofnun has received confirmation that the bird flu viruses that have been diagnosed recently in Iceland are of the harmful variant H5N1, which also spreads in Iceland's neighboring countries.

A laboratory in Germany has had viruses from chickens in Skeiðar and a white-fronted goose in Hornafjörður for further investigation and a response was received from it today which confirmed that it is the same serious pathogenic variant of the bird flu virus H5N1 that has spread in Europe in recent months.

The viruses that have been detected in other birds in this country are probably of the same type, as this is the most common variety in Europe at the moment...

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
A wild bird was found dead close to a flock of ten back-yard hens. The wild bird tested positive for AI of subtype H5. Six days later, one hen was found dead and three more had clinical signs (nasal discharge and diarrhea). HPAI was suspected. Thus, culling, sampling, secure disposal of carcasses and waste, cleaning and disinfection were carried out. Restriction zones were determined. No poultry is within the 3 km prevention zone.
