More Icelandic Swine Flu Patients in Intensive Care
Ten people have been admitted to hospital infected with the H1N1 (swine flu) virus in Iceland, three of whom are being kept in intensive care.
The number of those whose condition is critical has increased from one to three, according to last week?s reports.
Chief Epidemiologist at the Directorate of Health Haraldur Briem told Morgunbladid there are indications that the flu has become widespread in the capital region.
?We see significant increase in the number of those who have influenza-like symptoms,? Briem said, estimating that such cases are approaching 3,000.
Briem pointed out that those who are diagnosed are only a fraction of those who are infected. Judging by these numbers, it can be expected that 30,000 to 60,000 Icelanders have already been infected by the H1N1 virus.
Briem said that the first large delivery of swine flu vaccine is expected at the end of this month. He has asked that the delivery be sped up so that healthcare workers can be vaccinated as soon as possible.
