IOWA CITY - Trisha Kreman, a public health microbiologist at University Hygienic Laboratory, is traveling to India as one of five scientists selected to train laboratory technicians to test for bird flu.

Kreman will be writing about her three-week trip, which is coordinated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in a blog here at gazetteonline.com

The disease, also known as H5N1 avian influenza, has killed nearly 200 people worldwide. Scientists fear it could mutate and spread easily from person-to-person, leading to a worldwide outbreak.

Kreman is using her laboratory skills, and own vacation time, to make the trip. [Yay, Trisha Kreman! :applause:]

Chris Atchison, who directs the lab based at the University of Iowa's Oakdale Campus, said Kreman's experience benefits Iowa, "as she sees firsthand how public health workers can prevent the spread of this disease."
