I would expect that this is also partly due to the extreme temperatures being experienced in the region - see this thread - http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=206082

Niloufer lax, 17 kids die in Hyderabad
DC | Kaniza Garari | 24th May 2013

Hyderabad: An average 11 deaths occur in the neo-natal ward of Niloufer Hospital every day. On May 22, 17 deaths occurred in the ward. The high death rate is being attributed to the fact that the neo-natal ward hasn?t been sterilised for the last eight months.

Paediatricians working in the hospital are concerned at the increasing number of infant deaths. They claim that the overload of patients does not allow basic anti-infection measures to be carried out. It is essential to carry out these measures but that would require scaling down operations.

The 30-bed ward has over 130 infants at any given time. A senior doctor on condition of anonymity explained, ?The policy of the hospital is to admit all the patients. Two days ago, an attempt was made to carry out anti-infection procedures but we could do it only partially.?

Another serious problem in the neo-natal section is lack of nurses, and paramedical staff. There are only two nurses so parents are often asked to monitor their own children, even in the neo-natal intensive care unit, which is why it is always crowded. Large numbers of people from outside always increase the risk of infection to the patient.

By Rahul V Pisharody - HYDERABAD 24th May 2013 08:13 AM

Niloufer Hospital in the city has been in news for a long time for its notorious record of baby deaths. Going by the records available, 93 babies have died at the hospital in the last seven days, and 63 of them in the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit (NNICU).

Incidentally, on the day when the State Human Rights Commission secretary made a surprise inspection, there were 17 deaths recorded.

A senior doctor said, ?Three days ago, when a few sections of NNICU had to be shut for fumigation, we had referred the patients to Gandhi Hospital but they were sent back. Usually, family members are not allowed inside NNICU but since we lack nurses we are forced to take the assistance of the parents,? he said.

Patients too have been complaining about lack of facilities and are often seen in argument with authorities. There was no drinking water on Thursday. Mallaiah from Kadapa district, who had come for his son?s operation, said, ?Doctors and nurses are good but the other staff are very negligent and careless. Every time we enter the hospital, the gate-keeper demands money. We have to fight for everything.?
