Husbandry office probes cattle deaths

KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: The East Nusa Tenggara provincial husbandry office has sent a team to investigate the sudden deaths of hundreds of cattle in Belu regency over the past three weeks.

Office head Christian Leyloh, when contacted in Kupang, said the team consisted of veterinarians and medical staff.

"We don't want to jump to any conclusions. Earlier implications suggested the animals had died of breathing difficulties, but we will know exactly what happened after the team has done tests and analysis," said Christian, adding local authorities had worked to contain the disease from spreading to other areas.

North Central Timor Vice Regent Raymundus Fernandez, when contacted via phone, said health workers and related agencies had taken the necessary measures and samples from the dead animals.

A similar case occurred in Pitay village, Kupang regency, last May. More than 30 head of cattle died abruptly, while more than 5,000 were at risk of infection. -- JP
