Human Trials of Swine Flu Vaccine Scheduled

Human trials of the swine flu vaccine are scheduled to begin in mid-August in Finland. A French vaccine manufacturer has commissioned the vaccination research labs at Tampere University to begin testing on children.

Tampere University plans to inoculate 450 children and teens from six months to 17 years of age. The same company will be testing the vaccines on adults in France. Both trials will be among the first to be conducted in Europe.

The vaccine has only been in development for a few months. Normally, it is nearly unheard of for a vaccine to rush from development to human trials in just a matter of months. In addition, trials on adults are usually conducted and analysed before beginning trials on children. The risk of a serious swine flu epidemic has convinced researchers to step up the usual pace.

Nonetheless, Tampere University officials do not see any significant risk in these trials.

"We believe the risks are the same as for the ordinary seasonal flu vaccine, so there are no exceptional risks," says the head of the vaccine research unit, Timo Vesikari
