Hi Everyone!
We have made 2 forum changes.
We have moved the EHEC e.coli forum back into the Emerging Diseases forum because it appears the emergency status of this situation has become stable. Yesterday Germany declared the outbreak over since the last new case occurred 3 weeks ago:
"'The largest EHEC outbreak in Germany has come to an end,' said RKI President Reinhard Burger.
The last infection connected with the pathogen was reported three weeks ago, which covers the incubation time (from diagnosis to transferral) of the enterohemorrhagic E coli (EHEC)."
We are continuing to monitor the situation.
Unfortunately we have elevated one sub-forum to the front page: Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria including: MRSA, Beta-lactamases
Today we have news that there is a high prevalence of multidrug-resistant enterobacteriaceae with the NDM-1 enzyme in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. This indicates community spread.
Also posted today: The Environment as an Unrecognized Reservoir for Community-Associated Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus USA300: A Case-Control Study which concludes:
"The higher frequency of environmental contamination of case households with S. aureus in general and MRSA in particular implicates this as a potential reservoir for recolonization and increased risk of infection. Environmental colonization may contribute to the community spread of epidemic strains such as USA300."
Therefore, we find it incumbent to focus on these emerging antibiotic bacteria as a major global health threat equal to novel pandemic influenza.
