Two fever patients with travel history test negative for MERS-CoV

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) is today (May 21) investigating two suspected cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and called on the public to stay alert and maintain good personal, food and environmental hygiene during travel. The two male patients' nasopharyngeal aspirates tested negative for MERS Coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

The first patient, aged 47 with good past health, developed fever, cough, sore throat and shortness of breath on May 15. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), where he was admitted on May 20. He has been in stable condition.

Investigations revealed that the patient had travelled to Turkey from May 13 to 20 with transit in Doha, during which he had no contact with animals or patients. His travel collateral was asymptomatic so far.

The second patient, aged 34 with underlying illness, developed fever on May 19. He was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital for other illness today. He has been in stable condition.

Investigations revealed that the patient had travelled alone to Portugal from May 1 to 13 with transit in Dubai, during which he had no contact with animals or patients.

Both patients' nasopharyngeal aspirates were negative for MERS-CoV upon preliminary laboratory testing by the CHP's Public Health Laboratory Services Branch (PHLSB).

"We strongly advise travel agents organising tours to the Middle East not to arrange camel rides and activities involving camel contact, which may increase the risk of infection," a spokesman for the DH remarked.

"As pre-existing major illnesses can increase the likelihood of medical problems, including MERS, during travel, in view of recent pilgrimage activities, pilgrims should consult a health-care provider before travelling to assess whether it is medically advisable," the spokesman advised.

Locally, the DH's surveillance mechanism with public and private hospitals, practising doctors and at the airport is well in place. Suspected cases identified will be sent to public hospitals for isolation and management until their specimens test negative for MERS-CoV...
