Hong Kong woman rushed to hospital with Mers symptoms as Korean man tests positive

Friday, 29 May, 2015

A Hong Kong woman was rushed to hospital today showing symptoms of deadly Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers) after she shared a flight to the city with a Korean man confirmed to have the virus.

The man, who arrived in Hong Kong on a flight from South Korea on Tuesday before travelling by bus to mainland China, tested positive for the disease, the South Korean health ministry said this afternoon after it was notified by Chinese authorities.

The middle-aged woman, wearing full protective gear including a mask and cap, was seen being transported by ambulance from Sham Shui Po to the infectious disease centre at Princess Margaret Hospital at noon, according to a source. Healthcare staff who accompanied her to the hospital in Lai King were also clad in full protective gear.

The source said the woman was transported to the infectious disease centre for further examination after showing symptoms of the disease, but doctors are yet to confirm whether she has the virus.

(1 hr 20 mins ago)

Three people have been quarantined at Princess Margaret Hospital after showing symptoms of the potentially deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, Center of Health Protection confirmed.
They were said to have sat close to a South Korean man -- who has now been confirmed as having Mers - on a flight from Incheon to Hong Kong on Tuesday.
The 44-year-old man, who briefly stopped over in the SAR before heading to the mainland, is now quarantined in a Huizhou hospital.
Guangdong health authorities have confirmed that the man has tested positive for the deadly virus.
The center is calling on passengers who were on the same flight or bus as the patient to come forward for tests as soon as possible. --RTHK
