Cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Princess Margaret Hospital
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
The spokesperson for Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) made the following announcement today (July 28):
Three male patients (aged 70 to 95) admitted to rehabilitation and infirmary ward of Lai King Building were confirmed to have colonisation of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) on July 27 and July 28 and are asymptomatic.
The patients have been transferred to the isolation ward of Hospital Authority Infectious Disease Centre (HAIDC) for further treatment and observation.
In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital will conduct further screening and follow up.
There are clinical guidelines in public hospitals to ensure proper use of antibiotics, including Vancomycin, and management of VRE carriers.
The hospital has stepped up the infection control measures according to established guidelines and is closely monitoring patients' health. Admission to the ward and visiting arrangement are remained normal.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow-up.

Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Princess Margaret Hospital
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
Following an earlier announcement concerning patients who were confirmed to be carriers of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE), a spokesperson for Princess Margaret Hospital gave the following update today (August 1):
In accordance with prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital conducted screening and found three more male patients (aged 71 to 87) to be carriers of VRE.
They have been transferred to the isolation ward of the Hospital Authority Infectious Disease Centre for further monitoring or treatment.
There are clinical guidelines in public hospitals to ensure proper use of antibiotics, including Vancomycin, and management of VRE carriers. The hospital has stepped up infection control measures according to established guidelines and is closely monitoring patients' health.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow-up.

In accordance with prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has conducted screening.
One more 80-year-old male patient has been found to be a carrier of VRE and he is asymptomatic.
He has been transferred to the isolation ward of the Hospital Authority Infectious Disease Centre for further monitoring or treatment.
There are clinical guidelines in public hospitals to ensure proper use of antibiotics, including Vancomycin, and management of VRE carriers.

In accordance with prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has screened and found two more male patients (aged 64 and 84) to be carriers of VRE and are asymptomatic.
One of the patients has been transferred to the isolation ward of Hospital Authority Infectious Disease Centre for further monitoring.
Another patient is staying in old age home (OAH) for monitoring.
The OAH will step up infection control measures with assistance of the hospital. The hospital and OAH will closely monitor the concerned patients' conditions altogether.
