The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement today (September 20):

Four patients (aged 19 to 46) and six staff members in a male mentally handicapped ward of TMH have presented with fever and upper respiratory tract infection symptoms since September 11. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients. Test results of all patients were pending.

The patients are being treated under isolation and all are in stable condition.

Five of the concerned staff members have resumed duty while the remaining one is on sick leave now.

Admission to the ward has been suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward have been imposed and infection control measures have already been stepped up. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding an earlier announcement on a male mentally handicapped ward in Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) in which some patients had presented with upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) symptoms, the hospital spokesperson gave the following update today (September 21):

One more patient (aged 33) and one more staff member have presented with cough and URTI symptoms. The patient is being treated under isolation and is in stable condition.

The staff member concerned is currently on leave.

Appropriate viral tests had been arranged for the patient. So far, five patients have presented with URTI symptoms and the test results of three patients were confirmed to be positive for Respiratory Syncytial Virus.

Admission to the ward has been suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward has been imposed. Infection control measures have been stepped up. Other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
