Cluster of Human Metapneumovirus cases at Castle Peak Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

A spokesperson for Castle Peak Hospital made the following announcement today (June 9):

Three patients (aged 72 to 84) at a female psychogeriatric ward have presented with respiratory symptoms since June 3.

Appropriate viral tests had been arranged for the patients.

All test results were positive for Human Metapneumovirus.

The patients have been transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment under isolation and are in a stable condition.

Admission to and discharge from the ward have been suspended. Restricted visiting has also been imposed.

According to the established protocol, infection control measures have already been stepped up. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.

Regarding a psychogeriatric ward in which some patients had been confirmed with Human Metapneumovirus, the spokesperson of Castle Peak Hospital (CPH) made the following update today (June 11):

Two more female patients (aged 66 and 79) in the ward had presented with respiratory symptoms since 10 June 2011.

Appropriate viral tests had been arranged for the patients and their test results were positive to Human Metapneumovirus.

The patients have been transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment under isolation and are in stable condition.
Admission to the ward has been suspended and restricted visiting to the ward has been imposed.

Infection control measures have already been stepped up.All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
