Hong Kong culls 978 pigs after African swine fever detected at Lau Fau Shan farm; surveillance and biosecurity tightened

​23rd December 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has completed the culling and handling of 978 pigs at a licensed farm in Lau Fau Shan, Yuen Long, after samples tested positive for African swine fever (ASF). The operation, launched on 19 December under the ASF contingency plan following the department’s 17th December notification, concluded today.

The AFCD has informed the World Organisation for Animal Health and is conducting an epidemiological investigation with Mainland and international experts to curb any further spread of the virus. Comprehensive cleaning and disinfection will be carried out at the affected premises.​..

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

An ASF surveillance system is in place for domestic and wild pigs. Samples taken from pigs on a local pig farm (Index farm) tested positive for African Swine Fever (ASF) virus. The ASF contingency plan has been activated and pig movement from the index farm was immediately suspended until further notice. Pigs from the index farm were culled and disposed of. One operating pig farm within three kilometers of the index farm was inspected and tested negative for ASF. No reports of abnormalities from pig farms outside the 3 km zone have been received. Enhanced inspection, surveillance and investigation is continuing.
