Honduras: Alert rotavirus outbreak in neighboring countries

Date: 01/31/2012

TEGUCIGALPA (AP) - The government declared a state preventive health alert on the border with El Salvador and Nicaragua for an outbreak of rotavirus detected in these neighboring countries.

"We have taken the action to prevent contamination of our population," he said Tuesday at a press conference the deputy health minister, Javier Pastor.

He said that the disease has not yet reached an epidemic level.

"Therefore, the fence is preventive health care for now," he said. "And will remain so at the risk of the disease spreading to our country due to heavy traffic of people and property that exists in the border area."

Pastor reported that medical teams travel the lines of El Salvador and Nicaragua.

Doctors also monitor restaurants, shopping centers, school and work, public and private, in both border regions.

The government has recommended people to follow preventive measures like washing hands often, especially children. Apart from infecting humans, the disease also occurs in cattle.
