The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is drawing public attention to its investigation into a case of paediatric encephalitis affecting a 7-year-old girl.

The girl presented with fever since February 1. She was noted to have confusion and vomiting on February 3. She sought medical consultation at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on the same day and was admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit.

The girl showed signs of encephalitis. She is now in critical condition.

Her nasopharyngeal swab specimen tested positive for influenza B. Her nasopharyngeal swab, endotracheal aspirate, rectal swab and throat swab all tested negative for RT-PCR for enterovirus and Enterovirus type 71. Further laboratory investigation is ongoing.
