"Unimaginable devastation" in Jamaica, "considerable damage" in Haiti: Hurricane Melissa has killed at least 20 people

When it struck Jamaica on Tuesday, October 28, Melissa reached the 1935 record for the most intense hurricane at the time of landfall, according to an analysis of meteorological data from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Hurricane Melissa left behind images of "unimaginable devastation" in Jamaica, Eric Falt, UNESCO's regional director for the Caribbean, told franceinfo in Kingston on Wednesday, October 29. This hurricane equaled the record held for 90 years by Hurricane Labor Day, which devastated the Florida Keys (southeastern United States) in 1935 with winds also approaching 300 km/h.
While a full death toll is not yet available, at least 20 people have been killed in Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Panama, and, most notably, Haiti. In Jamaica, homes, commercial buildings, and road infrastructure have suffered extensive damage, according to the Jamaican Prime Minister, speaking on CNN. In southwestern Jamaica, the city of St. Elizabeth was flooded and several hospitals damaged, while the capital, Kingston, was largely spared. Communications with the rest of the island are, however, disrupted.
The hurricane then made landfall in Cuba after being downgraded to a Category 3 storm. "The night was very complex ," Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said on his social media account, urging Cubans to "stay indoors" due to the very strong winds. Waves up to eight meters high battered the island's southern coast, and a state of emergency was declared in six provinces in eastern Cuba. Streets in Santiago de Cuba, in the east of the island, were flooded and littered with debris; trees and power lines were down, AFP journalists on the ground reported. The United States announced it would deploy emergency response teams to the Caribbean, while the United Kingdom would provide €2.8 million in emergency financial aid.

Hurricane Melissa, which has killed at least 20 people in Haiti, devastated entire regions of Jamaica and flooded Cuba, is expected to hit Bermuda on Thursday after a multi-day journey through the Caribbean.

Authorities in the Bahamas archipelago, however, have cancelled the hurricane warning for the central and southern Bahamas, as well as for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Since Wednesday, Cuba has been cleaning its flooded and debris-covered streets. Armed with machetes, neighbors in Santiago de Cuba, the country's second-largest city, helped each other on Wednesday to clear streets littered with trees and branches, AFP observed.
Parts of houses have collapsed, corrugated iron roofs twisted by the winds lie on the ground, and the city is without electricity, with many poles lying on the ground. Rivers have burst their banks and in some places the water has reached a man's height.
The roof of Mariela Reyes' house was torn off and crashed into the street. " It's not easy to lose everything you have, the little you own ," said the discouraged 55-year-old woman.

Hurricane Melissa was the most powerful to make landfall in 90 years when it struck Jamaica on Tuesday as a Category 5 hurricane, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with winds of about 300 km/h.
There has been immense, unprecedented destruction of infrastructure, property, roads, communication and energy networks , said Dennis Zulu, UN coordinator in several Caribbean countries, including Jamaica, speaking from Kingston via video.
