Passive surveillance:
From 10 November 2008 to 11 February 2009, the Department of Livestock Development (DLD) received 285 notifications of sick or dead poultry conforming HPAI suspicions. All reports were followed by prompt investigation. If necessary, additional samples were collected for laboratory confirmation.
To present, there has been no laboratory evidence of HPAI.

Active surveillance:
During the period of 3 months, from 10 November 2008 to 11 February 2009, a total of 101,153 poultry keepers were visited for clinical surveillance. There were 205 poultry keepers (0.2%) which reported their observations on poultry deaths. From these households/farms, 265 poultry carcasses and 15,304 cloacal swab samples (from totally 83,957 birds) were submitted to relevant the DLD laboratories for HPAI viral confirmation. All collected samples yielded negative results thus far.
Three months have therefore elapsed without any evidence of HPAI H5N1 virus being detected. In accordance with Article 10.4.4. of the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code (Ed.2008), Thailand declares itself free from HPAI with effect from 11 February 2009.
